Hi Everybody

Without a doubt Facebook is one of the best social media sites. I have been on FB for a long time and found it invaluable yet very stressful at times whilst having anxiety and/or depression or even just checking it every day.

Your views on FB, its impact on your mental health, well being, whether good or not so good are more than welcome.

Thankyou for reading my thread topic!

Hi Carla...and thankyou for your post! Its a relief that others feel the same way re Facebook. With respect to the people that find the communication an asset with their family & friends.

Just for my own depression/anxiety it is a huge drain on my mental health not to mention exacerbating/triggering any past or current symptoms of anxiety/depression

Hi rhinoceros and thankyou for part of the discussion too! You have really summed up what I have been trying to say and you have said it so well

Rhinoceros mentioned "I find Facebook to be a very toxic thing for my anxiety and depression" I understand where you are coming from as I also feel that the bulk of people post is 'what others want to see' I was on FB for about 10 years and found it the same. I have had anxiety followed by depression for a long time and FB was the first 'toxic' part of my life that I had to get rid of.

I feel your pain where reality shows are concerned too....they are hard work for sure...with respect to your girlfriend of course...:-)

Thankyou Carla and Rhinoceros for taking the time to post on the forums

I hope you can both 'stick around' the forums. Your posts are highly valued here.....not to mention a breath of fresh air as well

Facebook can be great i used it for three years to run my business on got more sales there than anywhere else. I use it to group message my daughters if something like christmas is coming up so we can do wish lists , food all that stuff. I use groups to sell in , also groups that im learning things and sharing things in like cooking , candle and soap making.

Then it can be bloody awful with stupid people splaying all their rubbish all over the place and sharing things that just should not be shared. Also being attacked by random fools in groups is always fun too. Ahh your damned if you do and damned if you dont. If i didnt have my kids on there i probably wouldnt use it anymore though.

Hi Mary Ploppins!

Thankyou for posting and being a part of the forum family too 🙂

I hear you loud and clear on the benefits of FB where business is concerned. I have several friends that find serious value in the medium as a tool for their business and good on them.

I hear you about the jerks that jump on Facebook and can destroy someone's day.....especially the young people

I have a 25 year old daughter that loves Facebook but she gets hurt a lot on it unfortunately. I am in my 50's and had to dump it because no one really understood my depression or previous anxiety illness.

You are spot on Mary...."damned if you do and damned if you dont" It would be great if you could stick around!

Great to have you as part of the Beyond Blue forum family 🙂

Hi Blondguy,

Sorry to hear that happened to you and your daughter. My 27 year old has to stay off there at the moment too she is changing medications so is upset so very easily.

I don't know why people think they can act so foolishly on the internet, by belief is most of them are just gutless so try to find somewhere to talk their anger out on.

Hi Mary

You know the benefits and disadvantages and its really good to have some new feedback on this thread topic 🙂

I joined the Beyond Blue forums in January last year after being made redundant....and having ongoing clinical depression. I am so glad I did join as there have been so many non judgemental people here that have and still provide me with support. I find the forums a rock solid safe to post.

Just some background so you know where I am coming from Mary

I hope today is good to you!

Paul,

What a great thread, just found it.

It seems like FB has a benefits and disadvantages , I suppose like many things. Or is it Facebook that is the problem or how we use it or what issues we bring as well.?

I know people who dont use FB but like twitter. I don't understand twitter at all and it worries me how in a few words people's reputations and loves can be ruined.

For me FB is a way to keep in touch with old friends, extended family, niece and her family.

I also have a page for my business to promote it, so that is handy.

My partner is a photographer so likes putting on photographs and keeps in touch with his children who live far away.

I am lucky to have seen only the benefits of FB . I have put a few personal posts mainly during mental health week, about my mental health and have received only support.

My children hardly used FB at all. I think they see it as something older people use!!

I suppose it is up to us as adults to decided if FB will help us or hinder us.

Thanks again for a great thread

Quirky

Hi Quirky, Thanks for your post and good to read that you and your partner find positive value on FB. Very cool that your children arent showing interest. Having no moderation Facebook can sometimes be a rough place with young people with bullying being common. (school age kids & teens)

It hard too for parents to monitor their kids use of the site on a continual basis too

Have a great day Quirky 🙂

Social media such as Facebook does really affect my depression and anxiety.

I always have to turn off for a while as I find I compare myself to others too much. I always feel deflated like I haven't succeeded in my life compared with others. Be it - career, family, friends, income and beauty.

Hi Krystalramone

Thankyou for posting! I feel the same way as you do on this. I find the site very emotionally taxing as its so very competitive and can be heavy going

Have a good day

Paul

Hi blond guy,

after posting a reply I decided to have a, well "at least" a 24hr break from social media!

Hope your having a good Monday, sending positive vibes!
