Hello Everybody and new posters especially:-)

I have had anxiety since 1983 and depression from 1997. There is always someone that says 'You have to Love Yourself' before recovery. When people are suffering from anxiety/depression this may be the last 'advice' they really need. This is only my experience when I am 'advised to love myself' to rebuild my life. I have heard the following from people that cant 'love themselves' which is fair enough as I am a person that cant either. Your thoughts will help me and others learn from your point of view. I can only be 'gentle' to myself to heal...not love.

  • Why should I love myself if I dont in the first place?
  • I am in a dark place, how can I love myself?
  • I dont deserve to love myself
  • I am depressed...How can I love myself?
  • I have mega anxiety attacks..what is there to love about myself?
  • I hate myself and what I stand for...why should I?
  • I love my partner more...I will care about myself 'later'

When people have depression/anxiety/denial they dont need to be counseled with ' love yourself'. Thats a huge ask.

I dont need to climb Mt Everest by trying to love myself when I cant. It can be an unrealistic and even silly target to achieve having depression

I just prefer to be 'gentle' to myself. Same results and way less stress 🙂 Your thoughts/opinions are more than welcome

Thankyou so much

Paul

I'm so pleased my puppie is feeling much better and wants all the attention she can get, and have to see my vet again on Friday, that will be exciting for both of us.

Hey Geoff

I'm happy your puppy is happy again.
I'm sure another trip to the vet will be an adventure!

Hope she gets the "all clear" now.

Great news about your pup Geoff, although she's probably not looking forward to Friday eh .

Good luck . rx

Hello lovely people 🙂

I have not been here for a long time, but it was a busy time of thinking, making plans and decisions, taking steps towards goals, learning, reading, observing and discovering. In a way also finding my true(r) self.

I have a feeling that I evolved, somehow feel empowered... as someone once said, that 'blooming is not as painful as trying to contain it in the bud all the time'

Of course it does not mean, that I am completely out of the woods. There are moments, that I beat myself over something completely insignificant. But I am also able to tell myself, that I know this feeling will pass, and that if it is possible, I don't have to push myself to do something, that at that moment is causing my low mood.

Hey gucia6

Its wonderful to read your post and thankyou so much for being a part of the forum family gucia6

You mentioned ' I am also able to tell myself, that I know this feeling will pass, and that if it is possible, I don't have to push myself to do something, that at that moment is causing my low mood'

Dr Claire Weekes wrote many books about our awful feelings and that they will pass..just as you have said in your post above....Nice1 ✔

you are amazing and thankyou for helping others by sharing your own feelings

my kind thoughts

Hi gucia

Sometimes we push ourselves when the mind is not ready to be pushed. Having a positive frame of mind is good but we sometimes are not in the mood to swim 20 laps of a pool, yet other times we will eagerly swim 40.

Another way to overcome lack of motivation is not listening to your mind, just do the action. Eg you want to go for your daily run but you lie there on the couch unwilling to move. Instead of listening to your mind struggle with the concept, you get up and go for that run immediately. Ignore the resistance.

Hope those help.

Hi all,

Yeah I like that one, Tony,

just ignore the mind and do the action. Once the ball has started rolling it's easier to direct it's course.

Quirky I hate misplacing things, absolutely. Once my H's phone charger disappeared, after I had put it in a drawer (I think). It was very annoying for him as he couldn't charge his phone until a replacement was found. Now I have a rep for being forgetful and losing things. Grrrr! Ppl can use opportunities like that to get back at you, for being good at other things maybe, or to give themselves a sense of superiority. It's very immature I think.

I am very forgetful as well, whuich I am learning to think of as a positive, when I can't remember why I need to hold a grudge against someone. Start each day fresh!

Cheers,

J*
