Scared of being pregnant. Help

I am married and adore kids but the thought of being pregnant freaks me out and gives me anxiety and it’s making me avoid this next step. I have tried counselling and that wasn’t helpful. I have started reading books to inform me, but I still can’t shake this uneasiness away and it’s making me worry. What can I do to prepare myself, or do I just need to throw myself right into it?

Hi Aleesha,
Welcome to the Forums. Thank you for sharing what you have been going through lately.
I want to take some time to normalize your feelings. Pregnancy is a really significant experience to go through – both physically and emotionally – and there can be a lot of unknowns associated with it. How might my body respond to pregnancy? Will it change the way I feel about myself? How will I adjust to something I’ve never experienced before? When there are so many unknowns, it is perfectly understandable for the thought of pregnancy to cause a sense of anxiety, even when you are in a happy relationship.
It also represents the beginning of a new chapter of becoming a parent, which can be another overwhelming prospect! The most important thing is what reasons might lie at the core of your own uncertainty. Perhaps even writing a list of all the things that come to mind when you think of pregnancy and seeing if there are any themes that you can find.
It is great that you’ve sought some counselling and have been reading to learn more. There are some wonderful books and podcasts that you can read or listen to based on what you are going to find most helpful. PANDA, for example, have a great podcast called ‘Survive & Thrive’ https://www.panda.org.au/articles/panda-podcasts.
Is there anyone you feel comfortable speaking with about this, such as your partner or a friend? It is a lot to be grappling with on your own.
I hope the community here can provide their own insights, too. You are not alone in this.
Feel free to let us know how the last few days have gone for you and if you have found anything helpful in the meantime 💙
Kind regards
Sophie M
