Depression and close family overseas - anyone else in the same situation?

Hi all,

I have been depressed from some years now and I have been struggling to find my place here in Australia. I moved here for love as my husband is Australian. He knows how I am feeling and although we speak about it a lot he can't really empathise as all his family and friends are 1 hour away and mine are 30 hours on a plane...

Due to the travel restrictions and my PR status, I am not able to leave the country which I thought it was okay during the worst times but seeing all the information about being trapped here until next year,2 years or waiting for the vaccine(?) is making my anxiety go wild. My close family(parents and sister) are overseas and not knowing when I can see them is really affecting me. I really struggle to keep my worry under control and it doesn't help all the news about it. My home country and family got hit really bad, and Australia's number is nothing comparing to what Europe went through but they were never stripped from their right to leave their country.

Sorry for the rant, just want to see if anyone else is in the same situation and it would be helpful to hear how are they coping.

Thanks

Yeah , tbh l'm in 20 minds with all of it lately but people not being able to go home is just plain cruel and over kill to extreme which unfortunately Aus is pretty good at in lots of other things too so l dunno why l'm surprised.

On the borders , yeah see and once again, 3 minds about it all. But l just heard on some clip for example, some kids at boarding school over one border haven't been allowed home to their families , l mean just wtf. Just put the poor kids on a damn bus and get them home for God sakes you know. But on other fronts yeah l hear a lot of people in different parts and states are liking things this way and in ways l can understand that. l'm 3hrs from Melbourne myself up on the coast and we're use to millions of tourists but l do admit , l think we're all quietly enjoying the peace this yr tbh and we don't have any cases either. And then with the pace of the world these days and everything so entwined in a way it's all been the brakes that countries and the whole planet have needed for a long long time now, to just slow down , be still , even for just just awhile. But on many other fronts like things in this thread and lots of others , it's all just overkill . Like some l thought early in great , l'm proud to be here and to have a gov with the guts to do this , but of course lately after all this time , going on like this doesn't seem the way to go anymore because it's pretty obvious now world over that it only works until you go back to reality.

Thanks Tagney. I have been better, woke up today feeling very low, I'm very sad and disappointed. Another three months not knowing when I will see my family again, and I still can't help but keep some hope that I might be able to spend Christmas with them..I know it's stupid but hope is all I have left I guess and it's what keeps me going. Hope you are doing okay.

Thank you KC12. I'm doing ok at the moment. I really hope they open the border in December, for the sakes of all who actually need to leave for their own and other's well being. I feel that the damage that this is doing to people is very under estimated. Are you able to reapply for an exemption?

l do for you guys too but surely , December, they could open them now in most parts so hopefully by December it will happen for sure.

My gf needs to come back down from NSW in 2 wks time, it's been 4mths, praying we can get her here ok,

Hi randomx. I hope your girlfriend is able to get into Victoria. Separating people from each other like this is truly cruel and makes no sense. I hope you're right about opening the border before December, but there was an announcement this week that the international border will remain closed until then. It seems as though they won't be able to open it while some states continue with their hard border closures so people all over the country are being affected, not just the people in those states.

I don't think mental health and need to see my closest family will be allowed in this exemption system...especially when there are so many people trying to visit dying relatives and have been rejected... There's a lot of people in worse situations. Such a horrible thing to do, I do feel sorry for those going through that.

Unfortunately, all of this is making me feel not welcomed in Australia, I thought I could call it home but now I have serious doubts. No democratic country is treating their own citizens like that and in my case, I am not even a citizen but it does apply to me because I am a permanent resident. The funny thing is I can't even vote, I have no say in who makes the rules but it affects me to the point of taking away my freedom of movement. Sorry for the rant, but it's really hard to find anyone who can even emphasise with our situation.

Hi KC12. There are people who sympathise with you, including me. I was born in Australia but I am feeling shame at the moment, especially when I see the pictures coming out of Melbourne today with people being beaten up by police for trying to defend their freedoms. While this scenes are terrible and scary, it shows that there are people out there who do agree with you. The trouble is that only certain voices have been getting coverage until very recently and people are very frustrated that they are not being listened to. I am also feeling unwelcome, even though I was born here, as anyone who doesn't agree with these measures gets smacked down and accused of wanting people to die, which is not true. I have been ostracised by some people that I have known for years, because I don't agree with the Covid restrictions and what they are doing to innocent people. I honestly hope that you are able to find a way to see your family soon. Take care.

Thanks kc and tang. TBH kc l had no idea what was happening with people in your situation , couldn't quite pin it all down, really hope you get some joy though soon. Considering most countries are still open even with 1000s of cases a day in some your sitch seems insane l mean Vic is the only state with any problem t all , l dunno.

lf it's any consolation ,l'm sure l hear NZ is completely close and my friend was stuck in ltaly 3mths, couldn't even get just across the border to Slovenia which is her country, her house is only 250k from where she was stuck. But then when her and her bf finally did get back into Slovenia , his place is in Spain he's a citizen but they were then not allowed over her border and back into Spain to go home to his house which is where they live these days , for another 4 mths . At least they were together and she has her place in Slovenia they could stay in , but his kids were at his house in Spain and he'd been worried sick because since they'd left 10mths ago the virus started getting really bad there but by then he couldn't get back in to be with them all that time. The US wins the prize tho, highest numbers in the world, a lot of national still open , a lot of states still open and international still open . Suppose that's why they've won eh, lucky them

l hear ya Tang , l'm happy for anyone to demo about anything here these days, we need it. But yeah saw a clip of 6 cops all over one demonstrater, l just mean wt ? rx
