Favourite Bands/Singers

Hi guys,

I was inspired by Neil's thread about favourite movies.  I want to know - what are some of your favourite bands/musicians?

Do you have an album that you listen to over and over?  Is there a songwriter who you connect with, that seem like they draw their lyrics directly from your soul?  What is your favourite style of music?  Who did you grow up listening to?

Are you a musician yourself?

And importantly, I'm always looking to discover another band or genre so if you have any suggestions of a great song let me know so that I can look it up 🙂

As for me, I don't really like most of the stuff that gets played on the radio.  The lyrics seem meaningless to me, and the songs are mostly produced just to make money - not to connect with an audience or tell a story.  I prefer songs and artists that are sincere and genuine, that confront important and real life topics or are emotionally touching.  that doesn't mean I live for slow ballads... no, I listen to all kinds of music, fast paced - slow and rhythmic, rap, hip hop, jazz, folk, rock, alternative, metal.... I love it so long as it has some depth.

I'm currently hooked on a band called Twenty One Pilots.  I love em!  Also, I recently discovered a genre called Nerdcore which is rapping about nerdy stuff like computer games and everyday events etc... I love rap but I don't love a lot of the language or topics that are usually rapped about, so chilling out to some lighthearted Nerdcore works for me 🙂

Hi  there Daniel.  No need to apologise, I figured it out okay.  And yes, you were up and about very late.

Yes David Gates was the lead singer.  They were essentially a soft rock band (bit of a mixture of: pop and folk) and sang maily ballads.  One of the  most popular bands of their type in the 1970's.

Some of their most popular hit songs were:  Make It With You, Baby I'm-A Want You, Sweet Surrender, The Guitar Man, It Don't Matter To Me, Lost Without Your Love, Hooked On You.  Surely you remember some of those?

The last concert I have been to would have been Barbra Steisand during her 'Timeless" tour in Sydney in the year 2000.

I also like Mark Vincent, a young Aussie baritone who won Australia's got Talent 6 or 7 years ago.  And I have left some of his music playing on the JukeBox in the BB Cafe this morning.  ( - :

Hello Sherie, Yes, some of those Bread songs do ring a bell. I don't think I got into them at that age as, to my gang of friends, they weren't considered supercool, like Bowie, for example.

Barbra Streisand would have been great to see, what a voice and  many marvellous songs. My favourite concert was Lou Reed in 2003. I had been a big fan for years and to see him live was very special.

Will head on down to have a look at the BBCafe soon. Thanks for the invite!

Ciao for now, TMB/Daniel.

Hi Sherie,

Thanks for helping me to fit into Beyond Blue more. I really enjoyed our correspondence but I'm not well enough to continue into other threads like the BBCafe just yet. Should be ready in a while. Thanking you (and BB) for your help. Till next time.

All the best,
TMB

P.S. A favourite singer - Black Francis/Frank Black -  especially for his song "Threshold Apprehension"!

Hi Daniel.

Yes, I do hope you feel well enough to join everyone in the Cafe soon.  That would be good.  Although there are many more there now than there used to be when you were there a couple of months ago.  It has grown!  But its still good, just a little hard to keep up with everyone.

I dont know the singer you mentioned.  But Lou Reed, yes of course - fantastic.

Another one I really like are The Carpenters.  Did you used to like them as well?

Sherie xx

Hi Sherie,

Thanks for letting me know more about the Cafe. Sounds like it has grown a lot.

The Carpenters...I liked them but wasn't a mad-keen fan, however parts of songs from "Top of The World" and "Close to you" etc,  I still remember today.

Some other bands I liked in the late 70"s spring to mind. Elvis Costello and The Attractions, The Stranglers, XTC and The Pretenders to name a few.  Are there any others you really liked from that period?

Cheers
Daniel

Hi Everyone,

There are some great posts in this thread. I have been enjoying a trip down memory lane thinking of some of the artists you have all mentioned!

The first album I bought was a John Denver one. I used to like Neil Young, Queen, David Bowie, The Eagles, Cat Stevens  and so many more I just can't remember right now.

Does any one remember Manfred Man's Earth band? They had a song called "Going round in circles".

Who remembers the song with a line in it something like "There's a bad moon on the rise"

I used to think it was "There's a bathroom on the right!" Nothing wrong with my hearing. Ha. Ha.

It is funny when you sing along to a song only to find out that for thirty years you have been singing the wrong words!

Ah, let me see now.

I think these were all 1970's - Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Bay City Rollers, John(ny) Farnham, Kiss, Queen, Abba.

Sherie xx

I think you are right, they were all 70's. Shame, shame, shame, I can actually remember The Bay City Rollers with Woody and Eric! Queen is my pick of the bunch.

Never heard of "Going round in circles" but have been there! Manfred Man were a pretty good band IMHO. They did a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Blinded By The Light" and it was a big hit for them.

"There's a bad moon on the rise" was from Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising". It was used in American Werewolf in London to good effect.

Hi Daniel.

You could be giving away your age here.  Wasnt Credence Clearwater Revival more late 1960's?

But yes I also liked them.  Bad moon rising was great.

How about ELO?  They were a good 1970's band also.

Sherie xx

Yes you're half right, Creedence (or CCR) were active, late 60's, early 70's.

A decade later,  in 1979,  2 Oz bands were just emerging. Mental As Anything with "The Nips Are Getting Bigger" and Australian Crawl with "Beautiful People", both big hits. This was my heyday!

I liked Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) with songs like "Devil Woman", "Telephone Line"and "Don't Bring Me Down". They were together from 1970 to 1986 with main man Jeff Lynne.

Do you have any  Lou Reed albums?
