Favourite Bands/Singers

Hi guys,

I was inspired by Neil's thread about favourite movies.  I want to know - what are some of your favourite bands/musicians?

Do you have an album that you listen to over and over?  Is there a songwriter who you connect with, that seem like they draw their lyrics directly from your soul?  What is your favourite style of music?  Who did you grow up listening to?

Are you a musician yourself?

And importantly, I'm always looking to discover another band or genre so if you have any suggestions of a great song let me know so that I can look it up 🙂

As for me, I don't really like most of the stuff that gets played on the radio.  The lyrics seem meaningless to me, and the songs are mostly produced just to make money - not to connect with an audience or tell a story.  I prefer songs and artists that are sincere and genuine, that confront important and real life topics or are emotionally touching.  that doesn't mean I live for slow ballads... no, I listen to all kinds of music, fast paced - slow and rhythmic, rap, hip hop, jazz, folk, rock, alternative, metal.... I love it so long as it has some depth.

I'm currently hooked on a band called Twenty One Pilots.  I love em!  Also, I recently discovered a genre called Nerdcore which is rapping about nerdy stuff like computer games and everyday events etc... I love rap but I don't love a lot of the language or topics that are usually rapped about, so chilling out to some lighthearted Nerdcore works for me 🙂

I remember John Denver (revealing my age here. lol) I liked him too. But you know of all the voices I've heard  my favourite is Cat Stevens (Yousef).

Yes Cat Stevens (before he became Yousef) had a few hit songs in the early 1970's.  That was about the time I started to follow music.  Used to listen to his music on our way to school on the school bus.  We had to travel for about an hour and a half each way, so needed something to occupy our minds.

Songs like:  Peace Train, Moon Shadow, Morning Has Broken, Father & Son.

Yes he had a lovely voice.

I think we started listening to music around the same time. My first bought album was  The Eagles - Hotel California in 1975. At our school we had 2 main groups of fans. One was David Bowie supporters the other Neil Young.

P.S. I like the little dog in the picture. He looks very smart and alert!

A big favourite of mine too was Boston! They sang "More Than A Feeling"

Hi TMB.  The profile picture is my little dog Holly.  She's a great little dog.  She's my little 4.5 kg bundle of love and energy.  Mini foxie x chihuahua.  And yes she's a clever little thing.

My first albums would also have been bought in 1975 or 1976.  First albums were Neil Diamond, Cliff Richards and  Fleetwood Mac.

Hi Sherie, Thanks for telling me about your dog, Holly. She sounds terrific!  I once had a siamese cat called Boris. He was very loyal and affectionate.

Hot August Night - What an album!.

First concert, 1976, I saw Thin Lizzy. They were a very popular band at the time.

Boris sounds like a great pet.  Do you have a pet now, of any sort?

Yes I still have the Hot August Night album.  And yes I remember Thin Lizzie.  ( - :

First Concert???   Mmm, probably Cliff Richard, but I dont remember what year it was.  Most likely in the 80's.

I also saw Jon English at my local RSL way back in maybe the late 70's?  So he was probably the first live act I ever went to.  He toured as a solo performer back then to a lot of little country towns.

Sherie x

I can't have pets where I'm renting now which is a shame. If it were different I'd certainly consider getting one.

You still have H.A.N. album wow!

Jon English was a great talent. He was on the tv in Against The Wind (I think) and I'm pretty sure he played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. Trevor White played Jesus. If my memory serves me correctly I saw J.C.S. in Sydney in 1977. Seeing him at your local RSL would've been awesome. Last concert - Bowie, 2004.

Okay thanks Daniel, I will keep a look out for it.

Another of my favourite bands from the 70's was 'Bread' ............

Also an early album I bought, being "The Best of Bread".

Sherie xx

Hi folks - just wanted to say welcome back to MTB too! Good to see you Daniel. Did you know we've installed a jukebox in the cafe? Come and play anything you want mate.

Hiya Sherie hun - was just looking for you in the cafe. I'm putting my feet up there for a bit, if you feel like popping in. xx

Hi Sherie, terribly sorry for the mess in my last post. I was up far too late. I have reported it so I think it will be cleaned up soon. Once again sorry!

I have heard of Bread but can't recall any of their songs. In fact I don't really know a lot about them. I think the main guy was David Gates? but I'm not sure.

Last concert was David Bowie in 2004. He was excellent.

Hi Kaz, Thanks for the welcome back. No, I didn't know you had a jukebox installed in the cafe. Sounds interesting. Anything I want? That's tempting! May pop over some time. Nice to see you again too.  TMB
