Raw Talent vs me

Am I any less than people who have raw talent? I had to work through a lot to get to where I am today. I worked to get my speech delay in order, I worked hard to understand people better, I worked hard to become the artist/animator I am today and I have been working hard with my mental health and everything else in my life. And there are people who have raw talent who picks things up quicker than me. So am I any less than those people who get things done or achieve stuff quicker than me?

Hello KFPDW and welcome to the forum.

The short answer to your question is a “no”. You are not any less. You are yourself. Different. Unique.

We could always try to reverse the question and ask: are raw talents any less because they absorb things quicker than some but might be missing on other aspects i.e. resilience, learning to work hard for their achievements, and never give up. These, I believe are your attributes. So are those people any less because they might not have your attributes? The short answer is “no”. They are who they are. Different. Unique.

what an interesting post.
i don’t think I have an raw talent but I try and am determined, I am realistic and know my weaknesses.

i am slow like the tortoise but I finish. Be proud of what you have arranged.

Hi Quirkywords,

I didn't think of the tortoise analogy. That is a very solid point. Thanks for bringing that up and for replying to my post. I'm most grateful. 🙂

Hi Learn to Fly,

Thanks for replying to my message and for help put my mind at ease. I always thought that the people with Raw Talent were stronger people altogether. But I didn't think of it the way you put it. I will be keeping that in mind moving forward. 🙂

Glad you found it helpful, my friend. Sometimes it’s good to look at things from a different angle. Gain a bit of a perspective.

Hi there op.

Try not to bother your thoughts with that stuff , there's always more there's always less. Fly is exactly right,,,, and so is quirk. Thank the Gods there's all kinds of people in this world , no rights or wrongs really.

l have raw talent but over time l've seen those with less amount to much more in life than me, and l mean that in happiness, love, stability, things that really matter. They have other things, we all have other things. Who has what doesn't matter the important things are that you be happy and at peace. Whether that be twiddling our thumbs or climbing Everest, it doesn't matter .

Some of the happiest people l';ve ever met and admired the most have had the most simplest of lives.

Good luck.  rx

the short answer to your question is -> NO.

A little about me (and then swing back to you) ... I was not very good at school. For example, I did remedial reading in grade 9/10 - the fact was brought up by one of my teachers in front of everyone in class. I was not very good at math. I did not get into the course I wanted at Uni. I went to TAFE. I found out that I was good at something else and finished up with a Masters in that area. I am not good with my hands and fixing things. But I can listen, honest, etc.

Then there are people who have raw talent have their own issues, which I won't go into here.

It really does suck when you feel that others are better than you at everything (that's how I have felt) - that what you are is less than. And sometimes wish you were like "them". That would also be focusing on the black dot of the page.

I am sure you have plenty of talents, strengths and skills those others do not have. One thing I can say about you with certainty is that you are PERSISTENT and do not give up. You have worked hard to get to where you are today and that will help you in the long term.

Can you say (for certain) those with the raw talent are (all) persistent as you are?

Hi KFPDW,

Thank you for posting and being so brave to bring this up! Sometimes it can feel so unfair when someone is seemingly born with amazing talent (e.g. some child prodigies), but how do you know they haven't worked hard too? Have they just worked less than you for a similar result? Well, it's true that everyone is born with different capabilities and personalities, that is what makes us all human. However, Learn to Fly is right in saying that  through working hard you have learnt a lot and become a stronger person - you must feel pretty proud of what you have achieved. I think the lesson here is not to compare yourself to others, because we are all different. You probably have raw talent in certain things that others don't (you may not have even discovered this talent yet!) So there is really no point comparing in my opinion - just keep working hard and be proud of what you hav accomplished. You are not any less than anyone.

Hi Jaz28,

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my post, I really appreciate the kind words you have to say and it has made my day. Along with what everyone else has said, what you say makes sense and I feel better for it. Definitely has put things into perspective so much. The idea of coming across a raw talent I haven't even discovered yet was something I didn't even consider. So it'll be exciting to find that out one day but I will say this, I am proud of how far I have come this year. It hasn't been easy but I try hard every day to work on my skills as a artist as well as everything else in life. And I will make the effort to not compare to others and run my own race.

Hope you have a great Xmas and a happy holidays

All the Best 🙂 xoxo
