How do I deal with anxiety about the future and that life has no meaning?<br />

I’ve had a rollercoaster of a few months, I’ve found a decent combination of anti depressants thankfully which have helped my energy and depression a little.

My problem is, I’m making forward moving actions in my life like setting study up and I’m just absolutely dreading it.

life to me is pointless and mundane, I’m not sure if it’s my meds or mdd but all my interests are boring as hell to me now, I just sit there ruminating about how much the future is going to suck.

I’ve recently moved to a small town and I feel very isolated having only my L’s and the shortage of psych sessions are crazy. I’ve waited months between sessions.

How do I shake the thought that life has no meaning and accept/enjoy life and responsibility?

Hey Baileybasil

Ive had MDD, although it was a secondary diagnosis but it still stung.

I live in a small town currently too. It’s funny though when I lived in a city for a bit I was so sick I felt very isolated there too, just as I did growing up on a farm where at times I literally just saw my family. Sometimes it felt like I was a floating ghost amongst other people.

I know what you mean by lack of services. It’s strange people have problems out here as well but people seem to know less about mental health. I’m not speaking for everyone or everywhere It’s just a feeling I get.

I’m also studying strangely enough. I wonder do you think your dreading it because of the lack of energy, motivation and the feeling of no point, or is it because you don’t like what your studying?

Ive been told by psychologists that the harder you try to push a thought away the quicker it comes back. E.g don’t think about an orange elephant. What are you thinking?

I know that things will improve for you! But the hard part is the matter of when.

I wonder if you could ask about Telehealth or other options as months apart between appointments is going to make recovery really hard for you. Please don’t think ‘oh no it’s probably not worth it’ either because it is!

best wishes and take care of yourself

Hi Baileybasil,

Wow I must say I have noticed a huge change in your posts for the positive!

Well done for setting up study! That’s a great step forward…… what are you going to study?

Congratulations on getting your L s another fantastic forward movement for you……

You may not see it yet Baileybasil but you really are kicking goals…..

How do you accept and enjoy life?

How we perceive our life from our minds view is how our reality will be…

If we perceive it as mundane and boring then it will be our reality.

Try to change your perceptions of how your life is…

Before you go to sleep at night set your intention that tomorrow is going to be a fantastic day…. Live that day with intention see every day things as miracles…….

Keep growing

Hello Baileybasil, if I can take you back before these AD's starting working, what were your thoughts, may be that nothing is going to get better for you, well they have, even if it's just a little bit.

We can't expect the world to rotate just for us, we slowly learn to adjust to what's going to happen tomorrow and if need be change our thoughts that will accommodate us.

Can I suggest you look at 'existential thoughts', this may offer you some help.

As you have moved to a new town, doesn't mean nothing is happening, it's just that you don't know about it, but as you develop new friendships then slowly your world will change.

Best wishes.

Geoff.

The greatest thinkers in history have pondered this question of whether life has meaning. Should we continue the tradition?

Lets begin with the logic of the rational concept of "meaning". Lets use maths. If a problem is to "find x" then the x is an unknown. So therefore the "meaning" you seek is an "unknown" or a variable. This does not necessarily mean it has a value, it could be zero!, its nature as a variable indicates we havent found it yet.

Psychology, which gives us the 'wisdom of thinking' is useful in that it helps us to think well. However, it will never give "meaning" to our lives. Meaning is pure "knowledge" and can only come from pursuits like religion or philosophy. May I recommend Epicurus and his pursuit of pleasure in all parts of life, such as eating a bowl of grain or drinking a glass of water, as a stepping off point in your search for "meaning".
