ANXIETY, it can be overcome

Imagine a cake recipe with 10 ingredients one of which, naturally, is flour. You get all the ingredients in the bowl and you realise you have ran out of flour. There is no substitute...you have to have flour for a cake!

That is the situation often with anxiety. Miss one form of the formula and you fail in overcoming this crippling illness. That is my experience.

So the ingredients are (not in order of importance)-

  • Therapy by professional medical staff with your initial visit to your GP. Not happy ? get a second opinion.
  • Subsequent medication.
  • Exercises. I was skeptical. Not anymore. My favourite was - muscle tensioning exercises. Also finding a spot in a forest and playing youtube videos mainly pan flute by the prince of equador. That was my way of relaxing- yours might be different.
  • Removing toxic people and situations from your life. Yeh, you have to be firm and do it.
  • Find safe non anxious places. That involves no mobile phones of course.
  • Calmness around you from spouse and friends is important.
  • Limiting TV and computers activities.
  • A change of location to a better more ideal weather place and relaxed country town is good.
  • A hobby and exercise.
  • Good sound sleep
  • An appropriate profession eg not customer service or food.
  • Family close by.

There are likely many more. Please don't discount any of the above.

In my case it took 25 years to get rid of anxiety completely. But serious improvements came after 3-4 years. I still do the muscle tensioning exercises today before sleeping while lying in bed. It really helps me sleep. I had a sleep study a long time ago and have sleep apnea so I wear a CPAP air pump. My sleep is much better. Better sleep is important.

Hi TonyWK

Just my opinion as my anxiety was chronic....I really love this thread and respect the life experience that you have drawn on to provide your helpful counsel from

Without rewriting all your great points....just a couple from my experience if thats okay

  • Genuine & Calm acceptance of these awful symptoms of anxiety/panic. This can take some time, determination and strong desire to heal so we can have some peace of mind back in our lives
  • Genuine & Calm acceptance can be learned from Dr Claire Weekes in her book 'Self Help for your Nerves'. She is the only psychiatrist I know that has written about her own chronic anxiety and depression......Or through a psychologist of course!

You also brought up a great point re cell phones/tablets/computers too Tony....These only stimulate our brain activity thus leaving us more prone to anxiety/panic attacks.

Just for me when I am 'oversensitised' the last thing I need is the artificial stimuli of a 'smart phone' I always shut is off well before bed to achieve a better quality sleep

Seriously well written as usual and thankyou again TonyWK

That's great..if your unemployed and have the time to trip to the forest. Most of us have families and/or jobs to go to.

I do agree with you that everyone needs to find a something that works for them.. So far with my experiences with medical professionals is similar to finding a good mechanics keep trying until you find one your happy with. I am soon to be unemployed due to too many medical staff giving their opinions although it frees up my time to walk in the forest I guess. Won't put food on the table nor pay my bills but I will feel better.

Hi swhite, welcome

We all live in different environments. It's whatever suits you. It could be a park? If I need a forest trip I jump the back fence and its a 500 acre 18 hole gold course and the forests are everywhere. You might say I'm lucky, it wasn't without 40 years of hard work.

Anyway, 5 years ago I worked 12 hours a day 6 days a week. Drove 80,000 kms a year.. I fell in a feotal ball on a dirt road. That was the end of my working life. Creating income is really a totally different topic but I'm willing and my colleagues are willing to suggest some ideas if you'd like to talk. Create a new thread and see how you go. Let us help eh.?

I can feel some frustration in your post swhite. You know, that's ok. I know where you are at. Many of us due to our illnesses have slept in cars or been unemployed or in my case worked in the air force then jails as a warder. It finally took its toll.

I was unemployed for nearly 3 years around 1992-1995. During that time to supplement my income for me, wife and two small kids, I built cubbies for xmas. I got by with determination. I booked up my wood and hardware and paid it back after xmas. If one hasn't got the spirit to fight on then its a tough time. But you have to dig really deep and find that vigor.

I am willing to help you. Not everyone is against you here and we are not trying to make it hard for you.

In the meantime you might google this

I hope you are ok.
