My best friend is depressed

My best friend is depressed and i’ve been friends with her for 4 years now. She’s become more extroverted so she has more friends and has starting treating me like i’m inferior to her. She doesn’t care about me, only if i can help her and is a compulsive liar. She lies about having panic attacks so that i feel guilty for not being there for her sometimes. She’s still depressed and i feel like she’s making me depressed too. I want to leave her for better friends. Does this make me a bad person? What should i do?

Dear LaneyDelirio~

I'd like to welcome you here and can sympathize with your situation, friendship is not always easy. I guess there are a couple of things that stand out.

First is that any sort of decent friendship is based at least in part on wanting the best for the other person and trying to see they are OK. It is between equals. Anything else is not realy friendship. So here you have a situation where your friend has started to treat you badly, as well as which using the idea of illness (panic attacks) as a means of control.

So she has already started to drift away from true friendship with you.

The other thing is how one behaves is not all always an all-or-nothing deal. It is quite possible to have less contact without shunning a person completely. You could for example present a friendly but more reserved face and see her less often.

Do you think she is the sort of person who you could sit down with and explain the situation and have her change? I suppose after such a long friendship it would be a pity for it to simply stop without some sort of try along those lines. The only hesitation I have is that you talked of her manipulating you, and that sort of person often does not respond to reason, being to wrapped up in themselves

What do you think?
