Hey Alex,
Welcome to the forums! I'm glad you've posted here as it's a step in the right direction for you. Posting can be so difficult, especially for someone with social anxiety, so it's great that you've had the courage to do so.
I'm 24 and while I don't have social anxiety, I've had depression and panic attacks plagued me for a 2 month period in the middle of the year. Are you still seeing any mental health professionals?
I've recently started joining meet up groups. I'm in the Sydney area and I joined one for shy and anxious people. It's nice being around similar people to myself and I think everyone enjoyed it in their own quiet little way. Would you consider looking for a meet up group of shy or anxious people? It's comforting knowing you're not the only one, and you don't even need to talk about it. We just spoke about what we were doing in our lives as we wandered around the Powerhouse Musem. Because everyone's in the same boat, nobody pushes anyone to say anything or say more than they want.
I think if you look around the anxiety section of the forums, you'll find a lot of good tips and tricks from others as well.
Anyway, I hope you can continue to post here. It'd be lovely to find out more about you and hear your story. What do you get up to during the week nowadays?
James

Hi Alex, welcome on board.
You have come to the right place. This is a safe network of caring, understanding people. Many are/have been suffering social anxiety and the isolation that comes with it. If you find face to face communication too daunting, these forums are a good place to start. Kudos to you for taking this brave step forward.
Panic and anxiety attacks ARE scary, particularly when they take us by surprise. I remember them well...how could one forget ?
Are you undergoing therapy at the moment or on medication ?
There are many useful techniques to help you over rough patches. May they be relaxation or breathing related, they can only become efficient if practiced daily and when all is fine. A basketball match or dance competition day are not the right time/places to practice skills and moves. This has to be done beforehand. Giving yourself cues to practice is a wise idea. It could be waiting at traffic lights or in queues, doing the washing up, going in or outside the house, preparing for bed, sitting for a rest, at the comuter etc... You can google Relaxed breathing or Body Scan for example. One that is usually found easy and effective is to watch your breathing happen, without interfering/forcing anything. Feel the air slowly filling the lungs without making it happen, the natural brief pause until breath is spontaneously, slowly being exhaled. Feel that outgoing breath slowly take all tension downward with it, from the head down, right through the sole of the feet and sinking below the ground. The more often this is done during each day, the easier it will be for body and mind to respond when it is most needed. Gradually increasing the number of cues works well.
Please feel free to continue posting as much and as often as you feel comfortable with. We like meeting new people, listening to individual stories and sharing thoughts and concerns. We're here to support and cheer you on whenever needed...or just to chat.

Hey Alexandra Kate,
Welcome to the forum!
Anxiety is a pain. I'm sorry to hear that the social anxiety has developed into panic attacks recently.
I'm 23, and was diagnosed with OCD at 13. I was very shy and socially anxious throughout my teen years, and had mild depression in my early teens.
As James has said, you are definitely not alone. This community is amazingly supportive, and there are many interesting threads (conversations) that you might like to read. The BB Social Zone is a good place to go as a distraction too.
Like James, I am wondering whether you are currently seeing a doctor and/or a mental health professional about the social anxiety?
Here are two great resources that could be helpful for you to bookmark/read:

It would be great to hear more from you 🙂
Best wishes,
Zeal
