Hi there. I am new to the site and am looking forward to some support and advise, as well as giving it if I can. Have been suffering from mild depression for a few years but recently have been diagnosed with PTSD. A few months ago I was assaulted in my workplace (barman) and after recovering from rib and lung injuries developed extreme panic attacks and worsening depression. I was previously a police officer with 20 years service and my experiences there (some pretty terrible) have been coming back to me in the form of dreams and flashbacks. As a result of this I have been unable to work since October (with the exception of a few failed attempts). Just really wanting to call out for some advice and encouragement. Have some great medical and psychological support but feeling I need more from this forum. Thanks in anticipation!

Hi Timbod, welcome to the forum. It's great that you recognise you need support from fellow travellers and have reached out here. There's so much to be said for the companionship and support of people who really understand and share similar experiences. And there are plenty here. Take a good look around the forums - there are many threads here you might relate to, including some concerning PTSD and some about being a first responder.
Post wherever you wish, you're amongst friends.
Best wishes
Kaz

Hi Timbod,
Welcome to BB. I know you will be so welcome here! There is some really great support and advice to be found in here! And it is awesome you want to contribute to give advice and help also!
I really admire our police and what they do. I think people grossly underestimate the things they see ect and what it does to them.
I too have worked behind a bar, thankfully in a country town, where I had some great guys watching my back (I was only 18/19 yo). I thankfully have never gad to experience what you have but I could understand how it could happen.
I really wish I could give some advice to you, but I'm not sure I can. But I'm a great listener!

Hello Timbod and welcome. I hope some of us can be of some help....or at least a diversion from the ghastly thoughts, memories, flashbacks and dreams that are understandably plaguing you. You show courage just by surviving the way you have and for getting help which you say is excellent.....that's a relief to hear. You need more, you say. You'll find a motley crew of people here (at least I think they're all humans) all ages, shapes and sizes...you have to guess what we're really like.....won't that be fun!! I have this funny feeling that you are going to recover quite steadily and make big improvements.....When you feel like getting your mind off the PTSD and panic attacks, drop into the BB Cafe for some refreshments....you;ll always find one of us there to keep you company....some coffees, herb tea, caramel slices, fruit smoothies......wander around the garden and cuddle some of our pet lambs - nothing to be scared of there!........You're safe here Timbod......sleep well tonight!

I can totally understand what you are going through as something very similiar happened with me a few years ago, but
happens is that when these abuser's are taken to court, the court never allows for the PTSD and depression we have after
the assault, or perhaps they do, but it still doesn't alter the fact that when we have depression and PTSD it's not
enough, because the cost of seeing a psychologist mounts up.
Whether or not your abuser was taken to court does matter because then they will have a record, that will stop them from
getting insurance or any loans.
As this happened at work ( a few months ago)you should be entitled to a workers comp claim, which maybe happening, but
with me the court decided that all psychological sessions, medical bills, medication and anything else associated with
your injury to be paid by workers comp.
This is very important because over the years since my assault, all of these psych, medication and whatever else would
amount to an enormous amount of money, which there would be no way I could ever afford to pay for.
Can I ask whether you are married and have any children, and please only answer if you want to, because now I'm
divorced but still in constant contact with my 2 sons as well as talking to my ex.
When we have an injury like this and then try and work again, it's never going to be easy, because there maybe something
which hits a nerve from the past, so instead of going in 'full bore' and trying to work full time we have to ease our way
back in, because PTSD doesn't just go away as we hope that it would, it's trying to get the confidence back and realise
that we were in the wrong spot at the wrong time.
I would love to hear back from. Geoff.

Good Morning Timbod
Welcome! The PTSD 'tag' can drag a person down on its own. The symptoms are awful and I feel for you big time
You have had over 20 years in one of the toughest jobs on earth as an Officer of the Law. That by itself is like a huge flag telling me that you have the word 'Achiever' in your DNA/persona.
That 'strong constitution' you have by serving the public (and what you witnessed) is still there.....except right now you are flying a Boeing 747 through a thunderstorm without electrics.....scary. The anxiety attacks and mild depression will decrease in severity as a thunderstorm does.
Clear skies are coming Timbod
Be Gentle to Yourself, I think you are a kind hearted legend
(memo Moonstruck.....Motley yes....human....I'm still not sure)
