Hello - I'm new to the forums

Hello, I am new to the forums. I'm a woman, 55 years old, and in May this year I underwent bariatric surgery (sleeve gastrectomy). Since surgery I have experienced fatigue and just recently I've had a major depressive episode. This episode has taken me from being a high achieving PhD student and professional in the public service, to being unable to study or work. I have had so much time off work that my boss is getting sick of me. I am currently off antidepressants and will start a new type of antidepressant later this week. I am on a waiting list to see a local and trusted psychologist.

Hi FrancescaS and welcome to the BB forums. It is lovely to meet you.

Sorry to hear you have been struggling with depression and fatigue.

It can be hard to figure out it if is caused by the surgery or the depression. They both have fatigue as a symptom. I just want to ask if you have recently had blood tests done on your vitamin and mineral levels. With bariatric sugery (bypass or sleeve) people need to either take vitamin b12 tablets or have regular b12 shots. It is also common to become iron deficient. It is also important to make sure you follow your nutrition plan by your dietitian/dr because you need to ensure you get enough protein, vitamins and minerals with less intake. You probably know this but I just wanted to recap

I also know how hard it is to change medications. I had to do it myself. I was anxious about the process but I knew it needed to be done as as was doing all the right things and my GAD wasn't getting any better. I was glad I trusted the dr because the change was what was needed for me. I am now managing my GAD and depression a lot better. I think it will also be good to see a psychologist. Even years after my diagnosis I still sometimes see a psychologist (note recently had to change due to moving). It helps me keep myself on track and gives me strategies on how I deal with my GAD.

I am glad you have come on the forums to get help and support. That is one of the hardest steps to take. Being open and honest about your feelings is also a big step. If you ever have a question feel free to ask on the forums or ask your gp.

Please keep us updated. You seem like a smart beautiful soul and you know that depression can affect anyone at anytime. It is not your fault this is happening. You are doing the best you can like we all are.
