Dairy Industry Crisis...How You Can Help

Hello everyone!

I have just heard some farmers on Fairfax 3AW. They are very emotional and sound it. They have asked the public for their support.

They only ask that we buy 'Branded Milk' NOT the Supermarket generic brands. The farmers have said this will help them a great deal. I understand its dearer and some people cant afford to and thats fine. I have already bought some branded milk at full price to start helping

What are you thoughts on this? Please let me know if you can make a difference and help the farmers by returning to full price milk.

This is a crisis that effects many people in our community

Kind Thoughts

Paul

Oh boy, my latest pet topic.

Firstly the following relatives were dairy farmers in Tassy- grandfather, uncle and 5 cousins.

Some farmers over many years have done general farming a disservice. Slogans like "you don't eat without farmers" and the latest "no farmer,no food, no future". I see this as arrogant.

Without the city brain surgeon grandma wouldn't have got her tumour removed, city cleaners....disease would spread, soldiers...our country wouldn't be defended, tyre makers...trucks couldn't be driven....no milk to market. And so on.

My point on that is clear, we are all in this together. We are all Australian. We all need each other. The them and us attitude has to...go.

One young lady in SW Vic is at the forefront of this milkers fight. She claims she works 12 hour days. She says that one reason why dairy farmers should be a protected species is that they are often 4th generation on the land. It seems more than likely she has inherited her farm. At 20 yo she's doing better than most her age.

If a shop owner ,say a haberdashery or shoe shop was 4th generation would the public rally to save them? They have to eat as well.

In 1994 many jobs at Puckapunyal were privatised. 410 jobs in all. I got one in security. There was not one farmer or farmers partner among them.

In 2004 my small business had a downturn. I returned to Puckapunyal for 8 months 12 hour shift work to keep it afloat. Not doing this and staying on the land is a choice.

My point here is that this happens all the time and to " close the gates" might be necessary.

On the other hand there is a strong case for supporting the "buy branded milk" plea. Brand less milk is hurting them but have they, the farmers not diversified enough, had all their eggs in one sinking basket over many years? My family know the dairy farmers best years in the 1960's were over. It never recovered.

We also need to educate the farming communities to watch out for those with depressed thoughts/mood. No different to a city car labourer losing his/her job. The feeling of hopelessness is the same.

So dairy farmers need our help and we should support them as much as we can in every way. But we should do this for everyone.....even the local butcher, the hardware and that haberdasherer.

Thanks Tony, A grandfather an uncle and 5 cousins in the Diary Industry! You have a stack of knowledge on this. Love your input and your written word (and the quote too)

Whether its Pura or Parmalat or Great Ocean Road Diary or any other brands lets buy them. Not the supermarket branded milk.

Lets make a difference. Paul

Yes Paul, I totally agree. I live in an area which has a large dairy industry and I know that many of them are doing it really tough as a result of the discounted milk etc that the supermarkets are selling. Also the current President of the Company I work for is a dairy farmer, so I am aware of the issues they are currently facing.

I have never bought a carton or bottle of discounted supermarket branded milk, and never will. If this small act of obstinacy on my part can assist our dairy farmers in some small way, its a very small price for me to pay.

Sherie xx

Yes we can make a huge difference. Good to see 3AW pick it up as a topic.

As a side note, some were getting excited with no brand milk on the shelves, thinking the public were buying branded milk out. Stories are emerging that some major supermarkets are holding branded milk "at the back of the store" so the public will buy the unbranded milk first.

This is getting distasteful (sic) and these stores better be careful not to awaken the might of the digger.

Sherie said: "I have never bought a carton or bottle of discounted supermarket branded milk" You are a legend Sherie...I have been due to the price...whoops...Not anymore....period. Just branded named milk for me now.

Tony WK....You are so right about supermarkets (the big two) holding branded milk back. They do!! Check the shelf 'spacings' from W or C and you will see only their shareholders as a priority....The 2 chains involved are maximizing their profit by buying the same milk as cheaply as they can....They have no loyalty to any dairy farmer.....Just their shareholders. I mentioned the supermarkets involved in the Cafe...

I now will only buy my milk from Pura....Parmalat...or the great Ocean Road Road Dairy.....I have had gutful of corporate greed.

I hope anyone else that reads this thread can even just post and say that they wont buy supermarket branded milk anymore..

I heard 2 farmers in tears this morning on 3AW....Thankyou Tony WK and Sherie for your support 🙂

Ok - so I have asked myself, how is this thread relevant to the objective of this forum?

If a dairy farmer, teacher, cop, or military person (etc) reached out for support, then we are here to support them. I would not like this forum to start singling out individual industries for specific attention.

Lets stay focused.

Hi Hideaway

Thankyou for posting.

We are very focused on letting the dairy farmers, their families and their employees and their mental health.

If you take the time to read the 'New Posts' there is a dairy farmer I answered a post from on Friday. I can assure you my focus is where it should be on this matter....I am only caring for him and his community and as you would know this is a public forum.

This thread is about the people in the dairy industry and their mental health during a crisis. Thats my my first priority as a member of Beyond Blue...

My second priority is to assist the Dairy Industry by only suggesting to the public (not just the kind people on the forums) to purchase Branded Milk...not from the two leading giants that pocket the profits for their shareholders and not the dairy farmers. Pls check the feed from Fairfax 3AW this morning.
