it seems that most nights when I’m up late I get kinda sad for no reason. I just kinda feel numb and I start to question everything in my life. I’ve even seen memes about this feeling people experience at night. I’m definitely not the only one who goes through this. I’m usually fine during the day also. Anyone else get this or know why it happens?

Hello Tdog, welcome to the site.
I wonder whether the one reason is that it's different than what happens during the day because there are distractions, whether or not that's what we want, but life goes on around us, whereras at night we're all alone, so our mind is allowed (not that we particularly want it too) to ponder or perhaps mull over what's happened during the day, and with depression it's all the negative thoughts that dominate our lives.
There are no distractions, people working around us, the phone continually ringing, having to pick the kids up from school and so on, so there is no noise or activity, this allows our mind to question and debate all these negatives thoughts, because nothing will interrupt us.
Turn on your radio to a station you like, music or talk back, but music would probably be much better because then you won't have to disagree with another person who has had the chance to ring the operator and voice their opinion, which you may disagree with, because this can cause you to be worse.
For years I slept with the radio going, the song being sung took my mind off what I didn't want to think or mull over.
Best wishes.
Geoff.

There seems to be something about the night time hours, when our minds wander. It seems to depend on what mood we are in, the direction our night thoughts take. I've written some of my besst poetry at night, inspiration strikes at weird hours. Wehn I'm depressed, the depression seems worse in those hours. We can try to channel our thoughts into something more positive, but that doesn't always help. Sometimes it helps me to write my thoughts down in my diary, at other times I read. It's a matter of finding what works for you, distracting your thoughts by reading or tv or music, or something like that, writing your thoughts, or some other sstrategy. I hope you can find what works for you when your night thinking gets negative.

Hi Tdog,
Night-time is my only chance of peace and quiet after the rest of my family are all asleep. Too many chores during the daytime, one thing after another, leaves me feeling drained at the end of every day. I try to unwind but often I end up with negative thoughts going round and round inside my head. Then my sleep does not feel restful. I agree with the others, distraction with music should help. Also if you are able to think of one small thing you get to look forward to the next day, that might help you too. For me, eating chocolate is my daily highlight, haha.
