Why i don't donate blood

Ive got no idea what section to write this in. About 20yrs ago i donated blood for the first time and was feeling mentaly well that day until that night i was having suicidal thoughts out of the blue. I lived at home at the time. My mum and myself didnt think it was somehow related to donating until my next and last donation which again i was mentaly well that day until that night i became psychotic completely out of the blue. I was back to normal in the morning. My mum said that donating blood clearly affects me. Just out of pure fascination has anyone ever experienced this or ever heard of this. Cheers lynne

Hi Helium,

I have never heard about that before, but it's a really interesting trigger.

Do you think its a type of post traumatic thing (anxious about needles) or more physical (i.e. drop in blood pressure)?

Jess

Hi jess.

Never nervous of needles ect and was psychologicaly sound until both nights. I wasnt dizzy so wasnt blood pressure. Reading the post from someone about steroid induced psychosis reminded me about this. Lynne

Hi Lynne. Donating blood for the first time can be traumatic. I imagine you were cared for after (tea and a biscuit) I believe. However if nothing was actually said regarding after care etc, and no-one inquired as to how you felt, the isolation would've made you feel worse. I personally have never donated due to diabetes, and meds. However, I have heard some people do react from the needle and not having someone there as support for after. Maybe have a talk with your G.P, get some advice about whether it's worth repeating. I understand your motives behind it and salute you, however, sometimes it's better to have someone with you for the emotional support. Needles don't affect me, diabetes/needles, par for my life. I had an occasion to have a blood test soon after I was diagnosed. I have HBAC tests done every 6 months. A young lass was waiting to have a test done and she was ultra nervous. She paced the floor and became extremely agitated when I went ahead of her. Apparently she was prone to fainting when she was 'out of her comfort zone'. I have no idea of the outcome, but she had a friend with her for support. You said you didn't think you were nervous as such, but having that support might have helped you.

Hi paddyanne.

I was actualy fascinated by the process i remember lying there watching in amazement. I got after. I have absolutley no needle problems. I get bloodtests regularly to check my iron and prediabetes test. Aw that poor young lass that wouldve been terrible. Ive never mentioned it any doctor because im never gonna be taken seriously. They'll just say you have a mental health history its all in your head. But i know what happened was somehow a sideaffect of 2 much blood taken out.

Cheers lynne

Hi again, Lynne. With donating blood, is there a rest period after. I know there is light refreshments, but if you immediately stand after donating, lightheadedness could occur. Even suddenly standing from a sitting position can cause momentary dizziness. I understand the no needles part, all I was suggesting was if it was the first time donating, the experience was new and if you didn't understand the procedure, delayed reaction can cause some nasty side effects. I don't have any issues with blood tests, but I do have to stay still for a few minutes after. The common saying is the blood rushes to the head, don't know if there's any truth to it, but worth considering. The psychosis you mentioned might be worth looking into. Any Dr who brushes you off without listening or guiding isn't worth wasting time with. I would say talk to your Dr and don't be afraid to ask about the side effects of donating.

Hiya paddyanne☺

Yep you sit down for half an hr and take it relativley easy for the rest of the day. In the past ive done countless research and come up blank. I know its not realu important but its something thats always intrigued me.
