I hope this makes sense to someone and they'e able to shed some light.
I know the difference between a Psychologist and Psychiatrist but I'm wondering who I should consult first.
Counselling? Therapy? Psychologist?
Things have been getting worse. I have self managed for the past 12 years as the anxiety surrounding admitting what I feel and think scared me off. I had a GP tell me I had depression in High School but he said it was a phase. I guess I just want help.
I want someone to talk to. I want help from a professional to see if I'm normal or what is going on.
If you have any suggestions about the difference between fhe above and what I should do first - it would be appreciated.
Thank you for your time ☆

Hey Stayweird
Welcome to the forums and good on for having the courage to post too!
I used to have chronic anxiety followed by depression for a few years and its a bad place to be in no matter what degree of anxiety or depression we have
Finding a good GP even through word of mouth is well worth the time...Many GP's have a better understanding of mental illness nowadays compared to when I started having my anxiety attacks.
Psychiatrist.....usually well suited to the medication/diagnosis issues of what we need if our disorder is out of our GP's capabilities/knowledge
Psychologist......A smart move after being diagnosed by a good GP/psychiatrist...learning coping mechanisms and helping us 'really' understand what we are going through.....
Just a note....I had two GP's diagnose and treat my initial anxiety prior to seeing a psychiatrist
Booking a double appointment is a great idea with a GP.....
I hope some of this has been of help to you Stayweird
If you have any questions please reach out as there are many gentle people on the forums that can be here for you 🙂
You are not alone here

Some may bulk bill while others do charge you, but I'm not sure whether your doctor has offered the 'mental health plan', which entitles you to free 10 visits.
Pauls idea about booking a double appointment is excellent, and if you want to write down everything that concerns you, so you can then hand it over to whomever, this will help break the ice. Geoff.

Dear Stayweird
Hello and welcome to the forums. I love your name as I often feel weird when those black holes called depression kick in, though I am pleased to say this has not happened lately.
I am surprised a GP, or any health professional, would say depression is a phase. What I see as normal in high school students that is difficult to manage at times is the swing in moods due to adolescence. This does not mean you cannot be depressed. Sadly depression is a risk for all of us no matter what age we are. However you are where you are and we can talk about this.
The best way to get help is through your GP, though perhaps not the one you spoke to about your high school 'depression'. Talking with your GP means he/she can tell you if you are depressed or anxious. I appreciate you feel anxious and to some extent this is normal. We all get uptight and worry about different happenings in our life. There is a significant difference between normal stress and and anxiety and depression. So first port of call is your GP.
Book a long appointment with your GP. I suggest you write down what is happening for you. List your feelings and how long they last.
Some people, such as me, get to the GP and forget some of the things I want to say. It is so frustrating so I have a little checklist. At this point I have no idea what your doctor will say and I don't want to pre-empt anything.
Some general information. Look at the blue tab at the top of the page, The Facts, and explore the drop down list. You can read information about depression and anxiety. You can also take the depression checklist. It's not a diagnostic tool but will give you some idea of where you are heading. Print it off and give it to your doctor.
There are several options if your GP feels you are depressed and/or anxious. Medication, though this is not always suggested. If your GP has a special interest in MI he/she may offer to work with you. Your GP may organise a Mental Health Plan for you which entails you seeing a psychologist for up to ten visits. If your psychologist bulk bills there will be no charge. Unfortunately they usually charge more than the Medicare refund and you pay the difference.
Your GP may refer you to a psychiatrist. As you know, psychologists and psychiatrists work in different ways and your GP will take this into consideration when you meet. Psychiatrists fees are eligible for Medicare rebates.
Please continue to write in and talk about how you are going.
Mary

Hi Stayweird,
Welcome tot he forum and the community here. I see you have already been warmly welcomed and given some advice. The GP certainly is a good place to start.
I also like to borrow books from the library on dealing with depression. Even if you are not depressed, just a little low in mood, these self help books have some creative ways for getting your mind and body back into a useful way of thinking and acting.
There is a lot of information on the internet as well. If you do find something that you think relates to you, I find it is always a good idea to run it past my Doc as well. Dr. Google doesn't always have the right solution for every person.
There are lots of sections to this forum as well. There is all the practical help available plus a multitude of different sections to join in with if you like from the Christmas thread to depression.
Hope you find the help you need. As others have mentioned, you are more than welcome to share more of your story and concerns here.
Cheers from Dools
