Medication, anxiety and anger

Community Member

I have pretty bad depression and have been prescribed an antidepressant, have been on it for about 3 months now and have noticed I am quite angry all the time & anxious alot, like out of the blue, il be sitting there watching tv, then feel my stomach churning & get  so anxious & can't control it. I was always sad and cry alot but the anger & anxiety has gotten worse.

could it be the tablets causing this? I feel like killing everyone! Has anyone else got worse on their tablets? Or could it just be the depression getting worse? Not sure if I should taper & get off the tablets?

Hi Kingswood

Firstly, welcome to Beyond Blue and "Well done" to you on coming here and providing us with your post.

I read it and it troubles me - as obviously you're not feeling at all good with things.  I'd like to ask a couple of questions if I may?

Ok, so you're on anti depressant - for around 3 months.  Was this precribed to you by either your GP or a psyche??  My main question with this is;  have they not really been following you up on this?   As in, yes, they've prescribed you medication, but surely they wouldn't have then, kind of wiped their hands of you and to say something like:  "ok, now take these tablets and come back to see me in 6 months time?"  I so hope that's not the case?

I'd be thinking they should be monitoring you with the meds as well as having some sort of follow up approach with some counselling as well??

But as far as medications have adverse effects on you - yes, they can.  They can come in different forms as well - I had one particular brand that made me want to self-harm each day - so I had to get myself off them real fast.  I've also had feelings of wishing to provide harm to fellow members of the human race, similar to yourself - just thought I'd water that down a bit.  Thankfully I'm no longer like that.

But my immediate thought for you would be to get back to your prescribing doctor ONLY if you feel that they're ok.  If they're not, I'd be going along to see another doc - and you can search for Beyond Blue recommended GP's on this website - and if you do it that way, I'd be talking along your medication with you.

Please get back to us also Kingswood, as I'd like to hear the answer to some of the above questions.

Kind regards

Neil

Hi Kingswood. I have been having a simular problem, almost like uncontrollable anger, I am a very passive person normally, I was wondering whether meds can cause that

The doc (gp) just told me to come back in a couple of weeks but I haven't. I have started to see a psychologist and he wants to talk about things I'm not ready to talk about, I'm only started to get comfortable with him (done 5 sessions) I think it might be a good idea but its expensive so wont be able to keep going as Medicare only pays for 6. I told him about what I thought, maybe it was the mess making me angry and he did advise on going to dr and stopping meds but I'm not sure because I think I need something because I'm going crazy.

i don't want to find or try different meds because I feel sick off them and this one was the only one that I didn't feel sick. Sorry for the essay

Hi Kingswood

You know every time I see your name I think of that '80's show, Kingswood Country with Ted Bullpit.  🙂   Don't know if you're of the same thought pattern - I guess it depends on your age bracket, doesn't it?

But Kingswood, I would definitely be going back to your GP.  As soon as you possibly can - and let him know exactly how you're been feeling of late.  The feelings that you're experiencing aren't good (dah, tell me something I don't know, he says to me!) and it may well be a case of having to ease your way off them;  have a bit of a flush out period and he should be able to prescribe you with a different kind - hopefully aiming to do the same thing to your chemical balances within your brain, but hopefully at the same time, will give you none of the angry side effects that you're currently experiencing.

Hey, please let me know how you get on - I'd be interested in knowing.

Kind regards

Neil

ps:  Sluke, I hope you've read this, as this might well be the case for your good self also.

mate dont be sorry i so get it. the meds make you feel sick but not having them is worse yeah?
