Hi Everyone! New Posters are very welcome to share your experiences with a GP too!
I had an appointment yesterday with my GP. He is aware of what I do on the Beyond Blue forums. I asked him about anti depressants and how he treats his patients with depression/ anxiety and why some GP's dont prescribe meds. This is what I learned yesterday from one doctor.
- He has always had an interest in depression and anxiety and prescribes AD's where the symptoms fit the criteria to do so
- He will refer to a psychiatrist if a patient shows symptoms of a more 'complex' mental illness and not prescribe meds himself
- Some GP's have little interest in 'getting involved' with depression and will refer to a psychiatrist with little if any discussion
- He isnt 'pro meds' or 'anti-meds' He treats depression as a serious illness with meds to improve his patients health & well being
- He mentioned that a pro-active GP can know more about AD's than some psychiatrists as GP's have more frequent patient contact
It did surprise me that some GP's have little or no interest in treating depression. I hope these GP's are in the minority.
I am interested to know any good or not so good experiences other people have had with a GP. I posted this thread originally so any people with untreated depression/anxiety have a better understanding of how experiences with a GP can be positive step towards recovery.
All your thoughts are most welcome
Thankyou for taking the time to read my thread
Kind thoughts
Paul

Shred, dam straight that is the way it is. We all help each other that is for sure.
That is the brilliance of this forum. Everyone is going through their own battles but also helping out others. The absolute power of peer support is golden.

Hi guys
I finally have my space back again - without family staying.Don't get me wrong I needed their help immediately after my surgery and today they went home. Feels kind of strange. I suppose to 66 days is a fair hike without the antid's - seeing my psychologist tomorrow again, and will be allowed to drive as of Tuesday - yee haa!
Hope everyone is going well, as we say one day at a time...

Shred, that is almost end game for you wouldn't it? As in take yourself back two months and if i said to you, a few weeks after surgery, being off AD's for that long, family gone home and you are in good shape...would that have been about the perfect case scenario?

Dear Mark JT
I hope so... I am still frightened of relapsing without meds but my pyschologist today was pleased...see them again in a month. See psychiatrist on August 10. Will see as I start a new job next week too and am understandably nervous about it but hey hoo. It all comes back to still one foot in front of the other and a day at a time.
Funnily enough last night was hard on my own for the first time in weeks but, like a few things, I made it.Just got to hold strong and have faith in myself again...My support team is still around and I am forever grateful for their support including all you guys on the forum!

Shred, I am still on meds and i am scared of a relapse!! I would think that is a normal pattern of thinking as those who have traveled to the places that we have, do not want to re-visit them.
Being nervous about a new job - so is everyone else in the world so do not stress about that one.
Had a hard night last night - so did thousands of healthy people so again, nothing to overly stress about and as you very correctly point out, you got through it. Do not worry about that, it happens.
You are going so superbly well.
Mark.
