Dr has prescribed anti anxiety meds, feeling a bit nervous hoping for some positive stories

Hi everyone

Over the past 6 months I have developed some anxious feelings over a few things that have happened in my past and a stressful work environment this year. I can always feel the anxiety bubbling away under the surface and at times I feel great like nothing is there but at other times I get really riled up and feel so overwhelmed that I have to sit down for a while to calm down. I have been seeing a councillor through work which I find does help for the most part but I'm sick of that anxious feeling always in the back ground.

I've seen my GP today and he was aware of the situation and he has recommended a low dose SSRI which he thinks will help. I am a bit nervous about taking it but do want to move past this thing.

I was just wondering what to expect and if anyone has any positive stories about medication helping to control and move past anxiety. Thanks heaps

Hi Sensei,

Good on you for going to the GP and giving the meds a chance. If you read around the forums being nervous about taking new medication is pretty normal so you're not alone.

You wrote about...

that anxious feeling always in the back ground.

I relate to this. That was my 'normal' as long as I can remember. I take SSRIs for depression but a nice side effect was after about a week of starting meds the constant feeling of worry began to dull. It was a case of not realising how anxious I was until the feelings calmed down a little.

The meds are not a complete fix so I'm glad you're seeing a counsellor too. What other things have you put into place to look after yourself? Exercise? A hobby to look forward to and enjoy outside of work?

I hope you can keep writing and let us know how you go and what you find helps you.

Welcome to the forums 😊

Hi Nat

Yeah I keep very active outside of work, I go to the gym 4 days a week and usually get a round of golf in on a Saturday and I'm also going on a holiday soon so I will be off work for a month which I'm really looking foward to. Thanks for the reply

Hi Sensei,

Golf and gym hey? You are keeping busy!

Where are you traveling to on your holiday?

I would love to go overseas but unfortunately I am terrified of the enclosed space on a plane. Hubby dragged me on a plane to Canberra once (yep actually had to pull me along). I was watching the flight screen with the intention of waiting till it changed to 'flight closed' no intention of moving.

Hopefully you get some responses soon from anxiety sufferers in the meantime feel free to join in on the social threads and get to know everyone.
