Changing meds

I've had anxiety and depression for about 3 years now and been medicated for 2 years.

A few months ago I swapped medications due to weight gain and it's kind of been downhill from there, about 3 months ago I started to feel my anxiety coming back but I tried to manage it without changing meds. I finally changed my meds again on Tuesday but I feel stupid because it feels like I left it too late and I'm right back where I was 2 years ago. I have university exams at the moment and every time I sit down to study I feel this overwhelming sadness and anxiety. I just need these new meds to kick in soon

Hi Gettingthere. I'm sorry things have gone downhill since you changed meds a few months ago. It's a difficult choice; is the cost of the weight gain worth the benefit to your mental state? or, might there be meds out there which are just as good, but don't have the negative side effects on your weight? Don't blame yourself for wanting to see if there was something better out there.

I'd encourage you not to feel stupid. There are a lot of people who are in a similar boat to you - wishing we'd noticed and / or acted on symptoms or a recurrence of a mental illness! The other thing is to think about the possibility of deferred exams; if your GP agrees, you can get deferred exams based on anxiety and depression, I've known people who've done that. The university usually doesn't mind, the deferred exams are usually three weeks later, which does give you another three weeks time for the meds to kick in. Perhaps talk to your university's counselling service, they may also be able to help.

Hope things work out for you, and the world's looking a nicer place soon.
