Anyone else have to wait soo long to see a psychiatrist???

Hey guys. Well im in a position where i have been told i cant have my first appointment to see my psychiatrist until the end of september! Apparently hes fully booked until then. I cant believe this. Maybe its because im going through the public system i don't know. Has anyone else gone through a similar situation? I don't have to wait as long for a psychologist which is really weird there seems to be a few of them round and they can come to u more. The psychiatrist im seeing is on the other side of town and i need to pay a $60 gap fee! This is ridiculous! Im worried i could go downhill or get worse while waiting to see the doc. Any input would be appreciated.

hey chloekat,

I dont often see a psychiatrist but I usually have to wait around 6 weeks to see a psychologist so I would say a long waiting time is pretty normal.
Its pretty annoying when u feel urself going downhill, reach for help and be told to hold on longer.

The only way you can really deal with this is to book appointments as soon as u notice the slightest signs that something may be wrong, you can always cancel if it gets better.
Also try keeping track of your moods or mood swings, so you can bring it up when u finally have ur appointment and may even notice patterns. My psych gets me to just right down a number out of 1-10 for the day or week.
I have also linked in with a mental health worker who can see me regularly to fill in the waiting times and keep me on track. Maybe this would be helpful for you if there is one around town?

You got a real appointment with an actual Psychiatrist THS year?

Some of us had to wait a lot longer than that to get genuine treatment.

Yes the apppointment is in september  so a few monthes waiting time unfortunetly. U telling me others have waited longer? The publib system is pretty bad.  My mum has private cover and i know sometimes she has needed to wait a few monthes so i dont know what the go is.

Yes I am afraid that is what I am telling you.  It isn't just the 'public system' either that is to blame. As is so often the case in dealing with anything to do with mental illness, there are a number of contributing factors.

Not the least of which is that when a community has low or no awareness of the prevalence of mental illness in their community, nor sufficient accurate knowledge (not the same as information) to counteract ignorance (whether that that ignorance is intentional or not), that is when under funding, lack of infrastructure and demonisation of the relevant population cohort, will occur.

Anyway try not to worry about that peripheral stuff right now.  The point is, once you get an appointment, I know it is often a long  and frustrating wait what seems so out of synch with how terribly you suffer when in crisis.  While you are waiting you can access other services like counselling, phone helplines, a GP and other resources as others have outlined in above replies.  Try to be proactive wherever you can.

If you feel at any time you cannot wait for help, always call BB or 000 to ensure you keep your self safe.

Good luck.

Thanx for your input Hiighwaytohell. Fortunately i don't need to wait as long as my doctor was able to make an appointment for next week which is great its just going to be getting there and getting back in time to pick my daughter up which may be a struggle as i catch public transport. Thanks again for the support. Take care x

Hi there 🙂

I'm in the same position with my husband at the moment. He went to hospital due to depression about two months ago after battling for 6 years and  is only now getting an appointment.  The time before getting an appointment is crucial.  On the days between hospital and actually getting an appointment I ended up calling ththe mental health line. I'm not sure if you are in adelaide but if you are the number is 131465 not sure if this is just an adelaide number but each state will have ones you can call. I even had people come to our home a few times when needed. It has been a life saver.

Hope this helps. All the best xx
