Hey, first time posting here. I've been having some trouble with learning at school and am considering seeking out a mental health expert. From the readings I've done so far, I think that's going to be a therapist.
My question is, how would you go about learning more about what a therapist does? I want to be prepared and to have an understanding before I dive head first into it all. What would you recommend I look for in a therapist? How would you go about finding the right one? Any additional information would also be welcome, since I'm sure there's plenty I don't know considering this is the first time I've sought external help like this.
Thanks to everyone in advance.

hello Sherper, welcome to the site and I'm sure this could be a common question which is asked, however what each therapist does can be very different and unfortunately we never know until you see them.
You can read what type of treatment they normally do, but they change once they begin the session just to suit the situation, however my last psychologist seemed to be a nice welcoming person but as soon as the session started, his approach was certainly not how I wanted it to be, but I would not have known until I visited him.
Some may use different techniques, but again it depends on how the session between the two of you develops.
If I can give you an analogy, you want your house painted with some difficult areas to access a painter will say 'sure no problem' but when it to the point of them doing it, and it's too difficult for them and mess it all up, so you can't read a book by it's cover.
One thing you must be sure of is that you feel comfortable in telling them all those deep problems because if you can't then thattherpist is no good for you. Geoff.
