Son with Depression struggling to find a job

My Son, who is now in his mid 20's, had severe depression and anxiety during his time at university and whilst he has now graduated his academic record is poor. He hasn't got much by way of work experience and as a result he is struggling to find a job. Are there support groups, or similar that could provide him with support and help in his job search?

Hi titch, welcome

The most mundane and low hours per week job as a start would build confidence.

My niece, 22yo told me once she would never ever clean toilets. She got her first job this year as a cleaner...with many toilets to clean. I rang her to congratulate her on her attitude. I told her I'm in awe of her.

Some young people say they'll never flip burgers at Macca's. My other niece did for 4 years. Her friend she worked for made it to manager.

A friend of my daughter now 26yo as soon as he graduated said to me (when I asked what he was going to do) said "I'm looking for a management job" yet he had no life experience. His expectations were inflated. Two years later he finally realised this and got a job as a floor salesman in a white goods shop. He is now assistant manager.

But your sons challenges have a thorn- depression. I often advise here that with these illnesses not to expect too much of themselves and firstly look for part time work. Many people with depression that get full time work end up using up all their sick leave then fall out with management because they take days off without pay on their "bad days".

Living with depression is hard. You must make it your priority to survive the obstacles and no expect yourself to work like everyone else can.

So a part time job to supplement his Centrelink income and for him to keep looking for more suitable work in terms of an occupation. Goog luck

Thank you, that helpful. Are there organisations that help people with advice in these situations? He isn't keen on our advice and it might be better coming from a third party.

Hi Titch,

I have no idea. The only thing I can suggest is he becomes a member here also and posts his own thread on it.
