*Trigger warning* Eating for Health and Wellness

I have been struggling eating and eating healthy foods over the last couple of weeks. I really do not want to go back further to how I use to eat, that is eating junk food, takeaways, copious amounts of chocolate, processed junk and comfort eating.

Finding it challenging to stay motivated to actually prepare what I know helps me feel better mentally, emotionally and physically. Plus I have been feeling overwhelmed with other stuff happening in my life, which somehow makes it more challenging. The old unhealthy comfort eating thing is coming back. And I think I am getting concerned and scared about that. I so much do not want to go back to how I use to be. I was so sick. Plus I now have some physical things not right in my body , so I need to be more careful and mindful of what I eat. ( Pre cancer cells , high blood pressure )

I was eating really well since Febuary of this year, it’s just the last couple of weeks I haven’t.

So I would like to use this thread to help me be accountable to Beyond Blue people. So like a diary where I can post and report what I eat. And also any healthy eating tips, motivating strategies to help eat better or anything related to healthy eating for our bodies including our mental health.

Hi Shell and Paw

The temp work is ok. I had a bad day last week. It is very boring as I am only doing data entry. I was in my head the whole time the other week when doing it. The depression voice just making it worse. This week is better. I am just thinking about movies etc when doing it now. I recently saw Rocketman (amazing, a must see film, will probably be best film of the year) so just kinda listening to the songs in my head while working (no headphones allowed which sucks)

Shell I do find I gravitate towards junk food and my poor eating when feeling bad mentally (sometimes even physically, figure if I feel unwell, it can't make it worse). I do know what can kinda trigger it, but I go through fazes where I don't care and just do it anyways. Not great at the time. But when I am over it I can learn and grow from it. Try take a positive out of it I guess

How is everyones week going? I am keen for the weekend. I have so many jobs I need to do. I think I'll have to write a list to get it all done

Hello Ms P & Shell,

I hope you are both doing well.

Day 8 of June & my milk reduction isn't going quite to plan. I feel I did really well in May I managed to drop from the 4 litres per day to 3 or less & didn't exceed that new limit at all. I set a new limit for June of 2 litres or less per day & so far I have only managed it on two days. The other 5 days were still under the 3 litres, but it's not what I'm aiming for.

I'm still not eating healthy, which was my other aim. June isn't a good month for me, but I'm trying to stay on top of my mood swings. I have bought healthy food I just need to cook it.

HI paw

It is great you have started the decrease towards the government guidelines. I know you may not think you are meeting every goal, but that's ok. Take every victory, big or small. May have to have longer time periods before reduction, but that's ok.

I had some 'junk' food as some call it. But I as I like to say 'I regret nothing'. It was delicious and I enjoyed my ice cream with family. I also went on my long run today. Felt rotten doing it, but was happy to meet my distance target, even if a bit slow. Some runs are not all great, but just need to get them done (want to do another half marathon). I am hoping to go for a group bike ride tomorrow. BUt not sure if I'll be to tired after today. Can only see how I go. I just enjoy doing something social every now and again.

I have soaked some oats tonight for my breakfast tomorrow. I'm always keen for breakfast

Hi MsP,

I love having porridge for breakfast too. How are you managing with taking meals into work? Do you have a bigger lunch & then just take something small for tea or do you make your tea before you go & heat it up there.

I'm curious, after doing a long run, do you find you are motivated to make a healthy meal or feel like eating junk food, or does it not affect your eating one way or the other?

HI Paw

after a run sometimes I am motivated to cook healthy, however sometimes I am not. I sometimes cook in bulk so if I am not motivated I have a spare meal either in the fridge or freezer I can re-heat (with quick cook rice/pasta etc).

Sometimes I will feel like a muffin or something carb based after a run. I am ok with doing this. However I try healthy alternatives or portioning. E.g. wholemeal english muffin with jam or peanut butter. It does make me more hungry when I run more, but that's a good thing, because your body needs to ensure it gets enough nutrients and energy for it's activity. I sometimes get the hunger come in the next day, but I've heard amongst runners this is normal (so tired your hunger may not kick in immediately). Sometimes I feel like running, sometimes not. Today I wasn't hugely keen. But did it because I knew it would be good for me, especially for stress. Which it was and I enjoyed it. Sometimes the doing it is actually the easy part

How you going Paw Prints and Ms Purple?

I have still been struggling eating junk mainly the chocolate things. Binged on a whole packet of Tim tams last night. Not good. I am about to make some chocolate popcorn. The popcorn will be air popped. Then has a coating of coconut oil, raw cacao (raw cocoa powder) and coconut sugar. I am about to watch a movie, so this type of food just goes with it. I figured it's healthier then other types of popcorn.

I am still eating healthy meals. For lunch I made a creamy roasted tomato soup. So yummy. I roasted grape and plum tomatoes and garlic. Along with fresh thyme from my herb garden. The house still has the aroma of it all in the air. Mm nice. It feels comforting. After roasting I blended this up with vegan "chicken" stock, black pepper, tomato paste, soy milk and cashews. Tasted pretty yum.

I also have made a lentil cottage pie a couple of times. This is super yummy. This recipe is one from Adam Guthrie, who is an Australian vegan chef and health coach. Sooo good!

Hi Shelley

I ate pretty terribly too. I went out for drinks with my friend so that's why. I don't drink or go out often. I don't like hangovers and on Sundays I normally go for a bike ride (well at least once a fortnight) I didn't go for my ride today. Didn't feel up to it. I then saw some friends today for lunch which was also nice

I have twisties in the cupboard. SO temped to have a few. I don't mind twisties. Not that good for you, but ok occassionally 🙂

Hi anyone reading this

What did you have for dinner?

I’m trying to cook healthy main meals...tonight I had steak and a mix of veg - brocolini, zucchini, carrot, peas and onion cooked in a little stock and garlic.

Would love to read what others have, to get new ideas.
