Starting Self-Care

Hello. I am working in community services, so when we say self-care, I have a fair understanding of it. I know what it is and I somehow know how to do it. However, events in the past months seem to take a toll on me. It started when I was supporting my partner while she was dealing with some health issues. It's like I have become so hypervigilant about her symptoms that whenever she says that something's up again, my brain automatically goes to the thought "Here we go again." I love her, and I know I should be supporting her, but I noticed that I haven't been taking care of myself aside from the routine of eating healthier food. My mind feels noisy. I seldom have restful sleep. I haven't been enjoying any of my hobbies lately. I want to go back to slowing down and now I do not know how to start again. It's like we've been dealing with lots of issues. Do you have any strategies on starting self-care?

Hi, welcome

 

"Self care" what is it?  In my own words its caring for yourself in ways that arent normally attended to elsewhere, in the comfort of home at a time of your pleasing that assist you to seek out a calm relaxed environment leading to a better quality of life.

 

This can include-

 

  • Improving your diet
  • Increasing exercise
  • introducing personal boundaries of behaviour for people
  • Reviewing your ways of allowing others to contact you eg text rather than phone, times to contact etc
  • reviewing your employment or career
  • Holidays

One of my life changing transformations to my life was reading words of wisdom from wise people on Youtube. One in particular caught my eye and ears as I listened to him

If that helps you relax there are many more like- all is well, the perfect instrument and so on. Just google and put Prem Rawat Maharaji in front of those topics.

 

When we have mental illness issues, it isnt hard to fill your bucket up with stressful problems and feel you are over loaded. So, for instance with people you might have to make tough decisions to cut ties or distance yourself. That is an important self care strategy.

Hey Spellrune192, thank you so much for reaching out to us, welcome to the forums. 

 

As somebody who is also quite familiar with self-care/psychology but struggles to take on my own advice, I understand where you're coming from.

 

With regards to sleep, relaxing videos can be really helpful at night. They tend to put you into a better headspace to settle down by giving your mind something else to focus on. They're also a really low-maintenance form of self-care, as all you need (generally) is a device, and a good pair of headphones.

 

It's all about small steps with self-care, especially with returning to hobbies. If you like cooking, try doing something really simple and low-effort, for instance. If you enjoy painting but haven't found the motivation recently to do it, sit yourself down and start colouring in a picture or doodling on a piece of paper, and the motivation tends to follow. I once heard somewhere that we get caught up in the idea that motivation will come before action, when it's often the other way around. 

 

I will always be an advocate for journaling. Setting aside a little bit of time (even five minutes) in your day to get all of your thoughts out there can be really helpful. Journaling doesn't have to be just writing, either. Doodling counts as journaling. 

 

Couples' counselling/therapy may also be something you could look into. There are many misconceptions about couples' counselling, but it can be really good if you feel that there are things that you would benefit from working through together, or if you're seeking ways to better support your partner/have them better support you through something.
