SLEEP

Hi All,

In the past there may have been threads on sleep and how to improve our quality of sleep.

I am starting this thread up and hope to include past thread titles.

For some of us sleep is a real issue, the more we can learn about it the better informed we will be.

Funny stories on weird places you have fallen asleep are welcome as well.

For me, I had just moved house and was very busy getting everything organised. Friends invited me to the drag races. I was so tired and exhausted that I sat down, leant against the fence right near the starting line and fell asleep for most of the evening.

Hope to read some of your stories and tips.

Cheerio for now, from Mrs. Dools

Hey Mrs Dools

Just a reminder about cell phones before sleeping. I didnt only mean about using the phone with its bright screen and overstimulating our thought processes prior to going to sleep...but....

Even if we leave our phone on, we are in a continual state of anticipation....even when asleep. (Sure if we have a relative that is sick and we need to be contactable that is fine). Otherwise turn it off. You will have a deeper REM sleep from having it switched off

Hi Paul and Everyone,

Where we live, my mobile phone does not work in the house anyway. I have to charge it up every night. I receive text messages as I drive out of the town for work in the morning! Ha. Ha.

I have to pull over and see if the messages relate to my clients for that day. Some of them decide to go out picking mushrooms on the morning when I am due to assist them. At least it is good when they let me know this and don't just leave a message on the door saying they are out.

The last three days have been crazy buy here, chopping down fallen trees, getting the patio area clean and tidy and preparing food for 30 people for lunch and having depression and grief issues.

Last night I went to bed exhausted. I said my prayers and thought of everything I could that had gone well the last couple of days. I slept very well!

Cheers all from Mrs. Dools

My sleep is a roller coaster again...I do hate when it changes so suddenly.

Back on the sleep meds for a few days, again.

Hope the medication helps!

I told my husband I was going to bed last night, walked past the table where I have a jigsaw set up, and was there for about an hour! Ha. Ha.

I am find jigsaws to be quite compelling at the moment. I will need to learn to just walk right past the table when it is time for sleeping. Ha. Ha.

This is my first time post. I suffer from both anxiety and depression, and have always been a bad sleeper, even as a child.

I am 62 years old and have been on sleeping tablets every night for about 4 years, which I am not happy about as I am now addicted to them. Prior to 4 years ago, for about 5 years, I would only take the tablets if I felt I needed a good night's sleep to cope with the next day's activities. But during this time both my parents passed away, and there was a lot to sort out, and as I am the oldest one in the family, and retired, I was left with immense responsibility, and consequently I started taking the tablets more often.

The only time I have really slept well is when my children were young and I was a stay at home mum (1970s). I loved my time with the children and kept myself really busy during the day, so was glad to get to bed at night and have some sleep.

Over the years, even whilst working full-time, I would manage to get myself to sleep by reading. This sleep would only last for a couple of hours, then I would get up and read for a few more hours to get myself tired again, and go back to sleep until I had to get up for work.

Nowadays I take tablets and sleep for at least 8 hours (most nights), and wake up feeling fine and no side effects from the tablets. I have tried cutting down and/or going off the tablets for periods of time, but it doesn't work. As soon as I put the light out at night, my mind is constantly thinking - not necessarily depressing thoughts, but about everything. If I get up in the middle of the night to read, my husband then can't stay asleep.

My husband is a snorer, so if I don't take a tablet I lay there listening to him snoring and this just gets me mad. It's certainly not calming!

Obviously there is a lot more to my story, but I am just trying to condense it to get started. I would love to get off the sleeping tablets but I don't know how to achieve it.

Hi Flossie,

Welcome to the community here at Beyond Blue.

My husband is a snorer. He makes all kinds of noises during the night and sleep talks as well. We now have separate bedrooms so I can try to get some sleep.

I too have been a lousy sleep since childhood. My Dr. has tried different sleeping tablets and I still can't sleep more than 3 hours at a time. I would love to be able to sleep for 8 hours. I don't recall ever having done that.

In saying that, I do understand your desire to get off the tablets. Have you discussed this with your Dr?

I've tried a few natural remedies as well that are supposed to aid sleep, with moderate success.

Experiencing a very busy day sometimes helps me sleep better. I have the problem too that if I go to bed a little too late, then I am wide awake again.

It is not always easy to get the balance right.

Thanks for sharing here Flossie,

Cheers for now from Doolhof

Hi Doolhof,

Thanks for your reply.

I have discussed the likelihood of getting off my sleeping tablets with my dr. I have tried everything to get to sleep without them. Even if I'm physically exhausted, as soon as my head is on the pillow my brain is wide awake.

I've tried some natural remedies too, with no success.

Not a good time at the moment though to make some changes, as I'm having a rough time with depression and anxiety. Need to get things sorted and then have another try later down the track.

I certainly envy people who can go straight to sleep - like my husband!! He knows the problems I have with sleeping but obviously he can't fix them.

Hi all,

I sometimes find it difficult going to sleep.

What really seems to work for me is applying a little bit of lavender oil on my neck and pillow.

Give it a try!

Hi StrongMind,

Thanks for your suggestion about the lavender, I have heard some people put lavender oil in the bath as well.

Have you ever visited a lavender farm? I have been to a couple of different places. In one they made lavender scones and lavender tea.

Years ago I worked in a home for the elderly, a few of the older ladies liked lavender powder.

A friend of mine has a cup of warm milk every night before going to bed and believes that helps. Maybe she should add a bit of lavender to the milk. Not quite sure how that would taste!

Cheers from Mrs. Dools

Good thread.

I've been on sleeping tablets for over 2 years and I've halved my dose as my Dr suggested I do with the view to come off them. I'm wide awake. So I have relearn how to sleep without tablets.

I spoke to a BB who suggested herbal tea, watching some tv, do some relaxation and cuddle my dog.

I've got some ideas from the thread too.
