Thanks Dottie! Some really useful studying tips - definitely turning off social media makes a difference haha! I've got a bad habit of having my mobile close by - but it's a terrible distraction. I also like your idea of a reward system and regular breaks. This works for me - one challenge I have when intense studying is my diet - always reaching for that chocolate bar as a reward/boost to keep going lol. Exercise or a refreshing home made smoothie might be better.

Changing the study environment - good idea. Did this a couple of times when I went to uni to save power lol. Also a good idea to join a study group, which is a bit harder studying external, but not impossible. Just gotta keep at it, somehow. I've agonized over it many times, thinking am I doing the right thing, do I really want to do this and maybe I'm making a big mistake etc etc. Time to think more positively and face my fears. Thankfully, I have a semester break to get my sht together - got all my textbooks and have started to set aside some time to read through and get a head start. 2nd year is meant to be the hardest... Meanwhile, I'm sittin here enjoying some chocolate haha. That will be a hard one to sacrifice. Can I ask what your degree is? You mentioned honours... 🙂

Hi girl_interrupted,

I'm glad you found my suggestions helpful 😊 Yeah, I'm also very attached to my phone so I can relate ha, ha. I guess it's relatively easy to grab the quick sugar fix (helloooo chocolate) especially if you're feeling stressed.

Ah you're studying externally. That's cool, you can pace yourself as you see fit with lectures. I'm an internal student so I attend lectures on campus. 2nd year sure does sound stessful! Hopefully you'll feel rejuvenated after taking a semester off.

Yeah, studying definitely requires time and commitment (& money sacrifices sometimes). It's a pretty big investment- and I don't just mean in the monetary sense- so I think your doubts are understandable. I think if you feel that your heart is nursing then regardless of any obstacles, this is the right path for you on a personal level.

I just finished my second year studying Commerce/Psych. It's a 5 year degree so I have another 3 years to go- next year will by my 3rd year.

Keep at it! I believe that you'll get there if nursing is where your heart lies 😊

Hi,

So funny you started this thread I was thinking about this not long ago!

For years I had new years resolutions that were kind of the same as many others - be happy, lose weight, get my mess sorted out.. Then I came across this book called Desire Map. It's a great book but for any of you who aren't readers who don't care the idea is that instead of saying I want "xyz" we say I want to feel "xyz". If we say I want to feel happy, what does that look like? How do we know that we made it? But if we say I want to feel "nourished" - then that might be related to choosing better foods or making time to go for walks. Or I want to feel "connected" then that might mean joining new clubs or reaching out to old friends.

So my word for this year was trust, because I knew I had to let go of trying to control everything and just trust that things would be okay. I haven't decided on next years but I'm thinking growth - because I want to push myself into being more uncomfortable so that I can be a better person.

Hi! I guess it's that time of year when everyone is reflective and thinking about their future, as well as their successes and failures and how they can improve etc. The Desire Map sounds great. I especially like how you're not just saying what you want, you're naming it, unpacking it, being specific and following through with the goal/idea. Trust - that's a tough one isn't it? Letting go is a big challenge - well done for addressing it and owning it and actually taking steps to change your behaviour. Growth is so vital for our journey of life, learning and accomplishing things we once thought impossible. Challenging ourselves - the incredible insight it gives us. Stepping out of our comfort zone and facing our fears is such a huge feat but so worth it. When we realize that we can do it, even the smallest obstacle, what a wonderful feeling it is to achieve our goal. Gives us the motivation to keep going and reach higher and further. Have you given yourself a time frame, or do you hope to continue this challenge as an ongoing thing? Is there anything specific that you want to confront? For example, I am challenging myself to make contact with people by going to various meetup groups, joining in conversations etc. Make sure you reward yourself along the way, to give you incentive and keep the motivation going. 🙂

Yes old habits die hard! (chocolate, anything with sugar in it). Re study - I wish I could study internally, but in some ways it's easier not having to attend classes at a certain time. I've never been good at conformity lol. I've always been interested in Psychology - wow you're doin a double degree? Commerce/Psych is an interesting mix. But a 5 year degree! That's madness! Good on you. It definitely requires ALOT of discipline and sacrifice. I'm still working out what I want to do and whether nursing is really for me. I've come this far so it seems crazy to quit now. I think I just need to accept that there will be things I don't like and I need to work through my fears instead of giving up whenever things get tough.

Are you studying full time? You must have a very tight time schedule!

girl_interrupted,

Chocolate sure is good! Well there are both pros and cons for either study mode. I like internal because I enjoy the immediate "real time" interaction with the lecturers and my classmates. Also, there's the social aspect ha, ha.

It can be tricky to stay motivated when you're feeling uncertain and under pressure. Eye on the prize as they say. Maybe think of your nursing studies as "paying" your dues presently for a meaningful career in the future.

Aw thank you! Yeah, it's a double degree so it's fairly long. Ahuh, I've been studying full-time (I'm currently on Summer holidays) so juggling work and other commitments means that I have to really stay on top of things during the semesters.

romantic_thi3f, thanks for sharing your Desire Map tips on achieving goals/staying motivated. It looks like you're still figuring out your 2017 umbrella word. Maybe it will be growth or maybe not...either way, I'm sure you'll find the right word when the time comes to choose.

Hi Everyone,

Some posts back, Panther had some excellent ideas for New Year's resolutions. There have been some excellent ideas and suggestions all through this post. It is wonderful we can encourage each other in so many ways.

I also like the study hints and ideas. I don't do well trying to learn in a noisy environment. I was also surprised to find the local libraries in our region don't have desks where you can study, the only desks they have are full of computers.

2017...goodness me, I have only just started to get used to being in 2016! Ha. Ha.

Some people have already asked if I will be free to do this or that next year, I explained to them I need to be done with this year first! Ha. Ha.

Cheers all from Mrs. Dools

Hi Mrs. Dools,

Awesome to see you here! Wow, your local library does seem rather unusual to have only computer desks (?)

Yeah, I agree that 2016 flew so I'm not ready for 2017 either!

Take care now. See you around the forums.

Hi Dottie and everyone,

We have three libraries in our area and none of them have desks where you can study! One is so small it doesn't even have a chair for someone to sit on.

This week I have been cleaning up a room I hope to use for crafts. I figure if I clean it now, part of my New Year's plans will be to find time to be more creative! I'm finding treasures I forgot I even had!

Happy planning everyone!

Cheers to you Dottie and to all.

Hey girl_interrupted just replying from your message to me on the previous page.

I did end up getting getting two free pt sessions. It is too expensive for me to do it on a regular basis. Plus I don't think one on one training for me. It does make me a bit more anxious and feel concious of myself as they are just focusing on me. I prefer groups sessions. I also made a friend from one of the group classes (I'm newish to queensland so making new friends at the gym is awesome) and we are now gym buddies, so we motivate each other and do our own thing. I can now do 2 feet push ups. 1/5th towards my goal. I should be able to do 10 by feburary.
