Hi Everybody
Without a doubt Facebook is one of the best social media sites. I have been on FB for a long time and found it invaluable yet very stressful at times whilst having anxiety and/or depression or even just checking it every day.
Your views on FB, its impact on your mental health, well being, whether good or not so good are more than welcome.
Thankyou for reading my thread topic!
my kind thoughts

Hi BG
Ahhh, the good, the bad and the ugly of FB....
I am a relative newcomer to FB, only joining about 8 years ago. I can understand how people can become depressed and anxious being on this social media.
For me, it's all about how I use the media. When I first started, it was to keep up with the colleagues I worked with. It then expanded to a certain group of people that I knew way back, who loved to share and post 'political' - jokes, sarcasm, rubbishing pollies. Ugh, this was not what I wanted from this media. For a long while I didn't use it, but then turned back to it with a fresh approach. I found groups that I shared more interests with now. This has turned around my view on FB. The groups I have linked up with are positive and enjoy sharing things that make me happy. Mostly this is photographic groups. There is little dialogue or if there is any, it supports the image that is posted. One group meets up regularly to take photos of interest, to socialise and to have a coffee afterwards.
I also use FB to keep in touch with family and friends who I don't see regularly as I don't write letters and don't call (I think it's cheaper). But I will post/ or message on FB to find out how they are.
The social media I have struggled with is TWITTER. It is the pits. The nastiness I've seen on that is appalling. Having said that however, I also know, it is how I use it. I can avoid all the negativity by what I select to follow or not to follow 🙂 🙂
Cheers

Hi PamelaR
Thankyou for posting! Its always good to have a breath of fresh air on any topic.
There are many people that use FB and find value in it especially with family and friends as you mentioned. You are making me rethink my decision about cancelling it.
Twitter freaks me out....I understand if celebrities find value in it but I just dont see the point......if anyone has any positives about Twitter please let us know!
Thankyou Pamela for your input
Nice1

Paul and everyone,
I cant understand twitter at all as it seems so negative and addictive and spiteful but I would also like to hear from people who find it useful.
FB i can use for keeping in touch with relatives.
I have a friend who loves twitter but finds FB intrusive.
I know twitter can shame people and ruin people's careers and reputation.
I know there are mental health groups on FB that people join and find support.
I think when radio first came out and the television people were quite negative. I read that when books were first serialised on radio people felt that no one would read books any more andit would be the end of books.
I suppose the technology of the day needs to be used with care and enjoyed.

Hi all,
i use FBI to keep in touch with family and friends. I do post things hen I feel like it but I think part of that may be loneliness. I have no one to tel something to do I share on fab. Example last night I posted about the tennis. One friend was posting back so it became like a conversation andit was funny. I don't like reading people's posts in the news feeds and seeing people being nasty to each other. Why post if you have to be rude and nasty. Few days ago something in the feeds caught my attention so I read people's posts to see what others thought. Unfortunately a comment triggered my anxiety. Think I'll stick to just my own families and friends posts or better still cut back on using it. Cutting back frees up time.
twitter? No idea at all about that one.

I agree- Why post if you have to be rude and nasty- that should be a guideline not only for FB but for all the internet life in general.
Consideration both on or offline is so important.

No-one on my list of "friends" or acquaintances are ever hurtful at all. the only thing that really gets me down when looking through their FB posts...is that they are all happier than me. with only good, exciting, fulfilling, lovely things happening to them in the places they go and wonderful things they do.
I can't bring myself to post how wonderful life is being to me...when it is not true. I read all theirs and wonder why I am the only one who is sad or anxious or lonely????

Moon.
I know those wonderful photographs on FB showing how happy everyone is and having fun and eating making emails.
However I do know people who post about how depressed and sick they are and I actually find that a bit uncomfortable.
I know someone who wrote about an argument she was having with her daughter and I felt like I was eavesdropping.
Maybe there should be a balance.
CMF, I have read comments from a news feed and have found them annoying. I used to comment but I dont anymore as I can't see the point to replying.
