My wife wont keep medicine away from kids

My wife regularly takes sedatives and drugs for her hormones. She insists keeping these in an unlocked drawer beside her bed.

We have a 1 year old and 4 year old child who like to wander the house and get into things like kids do.

I've repeatedly asked her to lock them up safely and or keep them somewhere the kids cant reach. Her argument is that it's my responsibility to watch the kids at all times and that she needs her medicine at random times likes 3am (convenience). It's caused huge ongoing arguments. She won't budge and I keep bringing it up.

If worst case happened, what would be the view taken by the authorities I wonder? I'm at wits end and this is a huge issue for me and our relationship.

Hi Wallabyjack

I’m a mum with now adult children, but I remember their early childhood days clearly. You are right: the medication in the low and easily accessible drawer is a potential risk to your very young children.

In fact, there are many items typically stored in low-to-ground cupboards throughout almost every house that could be a risk, such as dishwasher balls, laundry detergents or cleaning products. Everything dangerous should be placed out of reach. Has your wife objected to safety proofing the house in general, or is this issue isolated to her tablets?

I think it’s both unrealistic and unreasonable for your wife to expect you to watch two children at all times, particularly if they head off in different directions!

Perhaps there’s a compromise solution. Is it possible for you to buy a small lock box (you can get one at Bunnings), which could be kept on top of the nightstand and therefore still provide your wife with convenience? Could she keep them on top of your dresser or any other higher piece of furniture in the bedroom? What about next to the sink in the closest bathroom, as she will need water anyway?
I think you need to keep talking to your wife. It’s important.
Kind thoughts to you
