Feeling alone

Hi, I'm new to this. Just a bit of background. I am a parent of a chronically ill child ( has 2 rare diseases). It requires numerous hospital stays and blood tests at hospital every 2 weeks. We have nearly lost him 3 times, and he takes numerous medications daily.  My partner has just started a demanding job, my eldest is going to live overseas in 3 weeks. I am at the lowest i have ever been. It came to a head 1 month ago when my partner suggested that I need help as i have been flying off the handle a bit and not coping with the simpliest of things. I have seen my GP who said I' suffering from PTSD and extreme depression. I have been on anti depressants for a month. 2 days ago, my partner left the family home as he said i have been coming unbearable to live with. He still loves me and wants to work it out. I have been referred to a psychologist but that is not for another 2 weeks. I really need some tips, input about how to manage my outbursts etc as it is impacting my relationship, which i do not want to lose. I do not know what  else to do.

Welcome to the Beyond Blue forums sarah74, I am glad you have posted. I am sure you will get some support and advice from the lovely people here. You have started on your journey of recovery so well done, you are doing the right thing. Don't hesitate to ring the Beyond Blue phone service if you like, it's 24/7, free and I bet the beautiful people there would help you to feel better straight away.

Communication between partners is so important, keep talking to your partner, remind him that these outbursts are not a true reflection of who you are, they are part of an illness and in 2 weeks you can start to form a strategy of recovery. It must be so challenging with your son, all 3 of you get a big hug from me. With the really stressful times you have been through it makes sense to get support to deal with how it has affected you, and you are.

So were you having these outbursts before you started on anti depressants (if you don't mind me asking)? And I guess you could think about what triggers these outbursts, is there a way to avoid these triggers for a while, so we can get your partner back home?? Breathing exercises could be useful, as your outburst starts could you remove yourself from the situation for a moment, pour all your focus on to your breath, 4 seconds in, 4 seconds out, not too deep, count in your head, focus on the counting and on the breath, other thoughts will come to mind, smash them!! Only counting and breath. The more you practice this the more natural it will become and the quicker it will work. Meditation is also very useful for training the brain to focus, it brings calmness.

Hey lots of love to all of you, you deserve it. You can have hope that your journey of recovery will bring peace and happiness.
