Mum has it, dad killed himself (not sure if he was sad but off himself anyway) just wanted to know because I’ve felt like life is shit since I was 19-20 and haven’t enjoy much from 11 to now. Not sure if they just sucked as parents or helped give me this bullshit way of thinking?

Hey Guest_8511
Welcome to the forums and good on you for having the courage to post too!
Thats a big question Guest. I understand where you are coming from as I felt like crap at the same ages you have mentioned and started to get super anxious at 19 etc etc.
Its only my humble opinion through my own experience with anxiety/depression but our upbringing may have an effect on our development for sure. Sure...sometimes many peoples upbringing is unpleasant like mine was but I couldnt undo the past so I just started to see my doc and she helped me out to change the way of thinking I had at the time.
You are very strong by posting Guest. Many people wouldnt have been as proactive as you have been by doing so.
We also have a young people's thread as well where many people feel the same as you (just check under the various thread subject titles)
You are not alone here...If you have any questions there are many gentle people that can be here for you too
My Kind thoughts
Paul

Hi Guest, welcome to the forum. Can't say it much better than blondguy, props for getting your thoughts out there. It's a reassuring sign, always, that you care about yourself, and have compassion in you, if you take a step to seek help, or find out about something that is bothering you.
To answer your question: Depression can be inherited genetically. However, just because your parents had it, does not necessarily mean you must have it. All that is inherited is a predisposition, or an increased likelihood to be affected by it. Environment is the other main factor. People with no inherited vulnerability to depression can get it, and people with very much inherited (and high) genetic vulnerability can go their whole lives without suffering depression. What is the primary trigger is the environment.
So, more specific to you: it is likely there is an inherited component to it. However, it is more likely that the environment you live/lived in is what fostered the development of depression.
This is reassuring to us: because we cannot treat or change our genes. But we can change and manipulate our environments, and learn different exercises which help us. This is one of the primary goals in treatment.
If you're having a hard time, were here for you if you'd like to share anything more.
If you feel like taking another step, seeing your doctor (hopefully someone you already know), and asking for some advice on who to see if you're feeling depressed. They can often lead you to good psychologists.
Hope you're doing alright, and again like blondguy said, well done for sharing with us.
All the best.

Unfortunately life doesn't get any better until you become an adult and somebody has taken you under their wing,
