I just need someone to give me advice

So I will get to the point.

I'm currently in my second year of my bachelor science degree and recently I enrolled into a unit that proved to be way too much for me to handle. Now not only is my grade for other units suffering along with it, but I feel a lot of anxiety and depressed on a number of occasions. My solution for this is to withdraw from that unit, but since it has past census date, I will have a W (Withdraw) on my transcript from now on.

But I'm also afraid of having the W because some people say it could affect future employment and make me look like a quitter. There is so much on my mind right now, I don't know what to think right now.

I just really needed to get this off my shoulder.

Any advice and constructive comment is welcome

Thanks

HI Mark and welcome to the forums

I myself struggled with anxiety and depression while at uni. I joined disability services. They assisted me with my placements and me making my appointments. They can also discuss you options in regards to this subject. You are eligible to join disability services if you have a diagnosed mental illness. You can look at your uni website and see what they have to offer. Give them a call and organise a meeting. I did this and it was helpful for me.Your teachers don't have to know about you being with disability services. The reason is anonymous.

Uni can be tough but having this support makes it more helpful

Thank you for your reply MsPurple

I will definitely have a think about this and look for any university materials or support that could assist me in regards to my to my employment. As for disability, I'm not sure if I'm eligible as I was not diagnosed with any disability in the past. But your advice was really stress relieving, to know such assistance exist really gives me hope.

Once again Thank you 🙂

There’s no way you should be worrying about a withdraw on your transcript. You need to look after no. 1 right now and that is you.... and your mental health should take priority. Talk to a Uni counsellor as soon as you can, it will really help.

good luck

Hi Mark,

Welcome to the forums and thanks for sharing your situation with us.

Like MsPurple mentioned above, I too struggled with my mental whilst at uni and the disability support services were great. So understanding and it is your right as a student to have access to extra support and different conditions than other students due to your health issues. Please phone your student services on Monday and arrange an appointment with your disability officers!

Before you see them for an appointment, you will have to visit your GP or a specialist and get them to fill out a form. This acts as evidence and supports your case. If your doctor can show that you were suffering this condition before you enrolled and in his professional opinion it negatively impacted on your studies then I don't see why your university won't accept your request. The only person who will know about your condition is your disability support officer and your unit coordinator/head of the degree/school.

Uni is extremely difficult and stressful at the best of times without carrying extra baggage in the form of mental health issues. Stay strong and you get through it man!

Hope this helped. Look forward to seeing your reply!

Nick.

Hi Mark, good replies above me.

All I want to say is that if a 'W' is put on your transcript, then I don't believe it will affect your future employment, and I say this because time passes quickly, the situation you are in may also change and it may not even be asked.

If it is, then just say the subject didn't suit you and as an example, there are people who change jobs every 12 months, and when asked why, all they say is, the job wasn't made out as it was meant to be, but they still get employed, the same principle applies with you if you are asked about the 'W', I'm sure no one will really care.

Best wishes.

Geoff.

Hey Mark,

Sorry to hear you're struggling. The others have given some good suggestions about support services etc.

I just wanted to mention that I have never ever been asked by any employer for a copy of my university transcript. It might depend on the type of job but I would imagine the most they'd ever ask for is a copy of your final graduation certificate. I have been asked for that a few times by employers.

Try not to stress, you're gonna be fine! I am sure it will work out. Just take care of yourself. Your health is the most important thing.

All the best.

Hi Mark

I have two W's on my transcript, and I have never been asked about them in a job interview, or by an employer. It sounds like you were doing really well up to that point, so I'd say you've nothing to worry about once you've finished the degree. I even did Honours and started a pHD! So you're in good company! (Although I didn't finish the pHD - my brain gave up on me halfway through)

Hi everyone

Sorry that this reply can in so late, but I first just wanna thank everyone's replies as these gave me so much hope and motivation to keep going. I did in the end withdraw from the unit but I did successfully passed that crazy semester. After that I did went to get help about my anxiety and depression issue, the counselor really helped me in coping with a lot of the issues I have. Now I'm continuing in my bachelors with better performance than before.

Once again thanks everyone for the kindness, advice and support in this community 🙂
