hey neil,
I know I am older than you but I have no idea who Catweazle Is.
I once asked my psych if he had experienced depression himself .he said this was an unfair question .Would I ask my cancer doctor if he ever had cancer? I guess not.
I think life experience counts for everything and you need to have lived a lot of years to achieve the wisdom needed to deal with people like us
Be kind to yourself

Thank you Ess Elle. What a lovely compliment.
If the thought of taking a break from BB panics you so much then stay and chat. Talk to everyone about your day and how you feel. Try not to answer others problems for a while so that you can concentrate on your own difficulties. Just chat to us here. Someone will answer you all the time.
If you have such a great bond with your psych then stay with him and listen. With all those years of training and practice he probably does know a thing or two. You remarked to Neil that you feel inadequate. Hello, this is a common symptom of depression. Bad at taking advice? Once again a common symptom. As you would know, sorting out the depression fuelled ideas from the real facts is also a common symptom. One of these ideas is that you are crazy. If you were there would be no worry. You would be able to relax and get on with your life in your crazy world with no concerns at all. I believe it is a sign of sanity to worry about being crazy. (Or am I just mad?)
One of the downsides of posting on a site like this is generous and sometimes overwhelming amount of advice and suggestions you receive. It's all well meant and as you say, comes from the collected experience of us all.
Neil, I remember Catweazle and at times I feel as old as him. Showing my age and yours too.
I will talk to you again Ess Elle.

dear Ess Elle, 'I once asked my psych if he had experienced depression himself .he said this was an unfair question', absolutely not, I always ask my psych and all that I have seen.
This is a question that is completely different than asking a doctor if he/she has had cancer, simply because they know the repercussions of what cancer will do to our body, but with depression they don't know, so if he/she has been through this illness then they know the pain and suffering of how we feel and how low we can get for a long time.
Everybody's depression are all different because there are so many variables that cause it, so he/she can't say to you 'just a moment I will have a look in my text book in chapter 14 and see what it says', it never works this way.
So the reason I ask my psych is because I want to know if they have experienced the thought of being suicidal as well as the feeling of self medicating, plus the absolute feeling of what depression feels like. L Geoff. x
