Depression or just normal ups & downs??

Hi

The last 2 weeks i have been feeling off. just like i can't be bothered doing anything. i would normally get up and do things on my days off work, but lately i can't seem to get up off the couch. I even hate the thought of going to work where normally work would be fine. Don't feel like talking to anyone and it's an effort to have a shower, do dishes, etc

I have been on an antideppressant for 2 years (was put on for anxiety) and just wondering if meds sometimes just stop working?

So all these thoughts racing through my head at the moment and not sure if this is just a normal lull in life. Thinking that i should be able to shake it off and force myself to do things then i'll start feeling ok again. Or if it is depression......

ps. am going to doctor to get advice on the meds but would love to hear other peoples experiences.

thanks.

Hi Littleone88,

Firstly, welcome to the forums.

It can go either way, sometimes we all have off days and that is quite normal, but when they start lasting for weeks, that is generally a sign of something else manifesting in the mind. Have you ever been treated or diagnosed with depression. It can go hand in hand with anxiety as you said you had that previously.

It's good you are seeing a doctor and i guess medication can stop working, your body can sometimes build a tolerance to what it is supposed to do from my experiance. Again, something you will chat with your doctor about no doubt.

Has there been anything else happen that has made you feel this way?

My best for you,

Jay

hello, as Jay has said it can go both ways, but when it continues for a long period of time then it's depression.
Antidepressants (AD) need to be reviewed frequently especially when you feel as though you are beginning to feel terrible again, but this not about blaming yourself because depression is so cruel to all of us.
Not wanting to have a shower, do the dishes or change your clothes is a typical sign of being depressed, so there are two ways to look at this, either you have more pressure being put on you or your AD needs to be increased, however if you feel this way then your AD's need to be reviewed.
It's not that easy to be able to shake these feelings off, because your depression is holding you back. Geoff.

Hello Littleone

As the two guys have said, it may or may not be depression. I have depression which goes into recession occasionally. The lead up to Christmas was hectic, isn't it always the case. After Christmas I was exhausted but able to stay at home and do nothing, well very little, and here I am beginning to feel brighter and more active. That's normal. Not being able to get out of bed etc is not the usual thing, unless you have another medical condition such as 'flu. If my weariness had continued I would have been back at my doctors by now.

By now I think you may have seen your doctor. Can you tell us the outcome? Browse this web site and read the information. It may be useful to either download the bits that apply to you or send for the information from BB.

Depression is not nice but an antidepressant can help a lot. As Geoff said, a medication review should be a regular event. Perhaps this is the time. My AD was changed at the beginning of the year and I am now feeling much better, apart from the Christmas glitch.

Love to hear from you again.

Mary
