Hi. This is a first for me and it's not something I usually do. I normally just read other people's comments and compare them to myself and then try and take some comfort in the replies they get back.

My story is that I work as a geologist and I've just been let go again. The industry at the moment is so bad. I don't look like getting another job for a long time and I'm not even sure I want one. I am always working in remote locations and constantly alone. I am now 43 and I didn't mind doing it when I was a younger fella. I just feel like I am done. I've had enough. I made the wrong choice to get into this industry because it has taken me away from everybody that I love and it is also so volatile. People are so easily discarded. I know, you are probably thinking blah, blah, blah.

i know I'm depressed. Have been taking medication for 10yrs. I've just started drinking heavily again since I got my notice from work. Got up this morning and drank half a bottle of bourbon then went to work. In a taxi, I wouldn't drive when I'm like this. I just can't focus on anything. I have no joy or fun in my soul like I use to. Nothing seems like it will help. I don't even think my meds help anymore. I really need help because I don't know if I will be around much longer if I don't get some. Please, anyone.

Hi there, We are so glad that you have reached out for some support. It really does sound like things are hard at the moment and getting some support may help. We are a little worried that you are at work after consuming alcohol and would probably suggest getting in a taxi and going home. Have you got any close friends or family you could call on at this time of need? We also would suggest that you go to your GP and talk with them about how you are feeling. They can rel-ook at medication and also provide options for counselling etc. As you know you are definitely not alone here on this website there are many people struggling with similar issues. We wanted to write and hopefully support you to seek some help as soon as you can but we are sure you'll also get some great support here from the community. take care and please let us know when you have linked in with your supports,

Hi.

I have been on medication for 10 years also, sometimes I worry too whether it is still helping me.

I don't know if I can make anything better, but I'm here.

Alcohol temporarily suppresses the nervous system which alleviates depressive feelings in some people but ongoing consumption can make mental issues that much worse whereas acknowledging you have an issue and taking positive action will hopefully bring long-term relief.

If you do not have anyone close you can confide in (family/friends), ask your GP for advice on your options.

dear Tummy, being in your industry would be a lonely and unloved position, so far away, and the only contact being the phone or maybe skype, but then once this conversation ends you're alone again.

I am curious as you say 'again', but I do know that it's volatile industry, with a bit of hit and miss for the company.

If you need to drink half a bottle of spirits before work, then this means that you still have depression, and that the medication is not working for you.

Your safety is of prime concern, but being where you are at the moment means that you have to get professional assistance, and with this it means that you have to readjust back to the community, which is something that you may have difficulty with, as you have been alone for so long.

Your medication needs to be reassessed as there are a few other issues that your doctor and psych. have address. Geoff.
