Hello. I am suffering from depression. I have no friends, no one to lean on, I've lost interest in work, life-socialising, I sit in my house 24/7, I don't feel I'm excepted in this life, I have government debt overwhelming me to a point I'm drowning in my own tears because I have a fear I'll end up in jail because I can't manage money and find it extremely hard to wake up, trouble sleeping but when I do sleep it can be up to 24 hours at a time, I'm a 42 year old male that is very emotional and tear up at a drop of a hat,  this has been going out for 2 years and I'm at the end of my tether. I don't know who to talk too , I don't know how to fix this,

i need help

Hey there,

Firstly, you'll find that debt is a "civil" matter, and therefore you cannot be jailed for not paying a debt.

You're not alone with those types of feelings though, if you want someone to chat to I'm here for the next hour or so - sometimes talking about things can help 🙂

Hi Inadeephole,

Welcome to the Beyond Blue forums, I am sorry to hear how you are feeling mate. I think you could ring the Beyond Blue phone service, it's 24/7, free and professionals there can help you to feel better straight away and also start to make some plans for the future.

You might not be able to change your financial situation immediately but there will be ways to reduce the emotion and energy you lose to it. It will be small manageable steps, small changes you can make towards feeling better. I find it useful to separate the issues in my life, your financial situation is just one part of you and with practice you can reduce how much it affects the other parts of your life. I think it's important to nurture all the important parts of your life to give you strength across the board. So perhaps you can start taking a few steps that will take your mind off things, maybe you could organize to catch up with a mate, leave your financial worries at home, you deserve a break from thinking about this but you may have to push hard to get out of the rut.

Perhaps it is time to revisit your passions, what do you care about and how can you participate today? No, it might not feel comfortable but it is in your best interest.

Are you on a plan to pay off this debt? Even paying a small amount on a regular basis might make you feel better. You can get through this mate and I hope you know you can talk here any time and we will listen.
