@Mentions
What are @mentions?
@Mentions let you tag another member by typing @ followed by their username (for example, @username).
When you mention someone, they’ll receive a notification on the Forums. They’ll also receive an email notification, unless they’ve chosen to turn email notifications for @mentions off in their settings.
@Mentions help keep discussions clear when several members are taking part. Being mentioned is only an invitation to reply, and it’s always okay not to respond.
How do I use @mentions?
To mention someone:
- Type @ in your reply
- Start typing their username
- Select their name from the list
That’s it. The mention will appear in your post in blue once selected.
When should I use @mentions?
You might use one to:
- reply directly to someone you’re already speaking with
- clarify who you’re responding to in a group discussion
- thank or acknowledge someone’s contribution
For example: “@ExampleMember, I really appreciated what you shared about coping with exams.”
The Forums is a community. No member is responsible for providing support to others.
When should I avoid using @mentions?
@Mentions aren’t meant to pressure someone, demand a response, or draw people into discussions they’re not already part of.
Please avoid using @mentions to bring specific members into discussions in the PTSD and trauma and Suicidal thoughts and self-harm topics.
Sophie_M, the moderation team’s account, should not be @mentioned. If you need moderator assistance, please use the Report Post button or email modsupport@beyondblue.org.au.
If someone doesn’t respond, it simply means they may not be available. Please don’t follow up by mentioning them again.
What if I don’t want to be mentioned or notified?
@Mentions can’t be turned off entirely.
You can turn off email notifications for @mentions in your settings. You’ll still receive a notification on the Forums if someone mentions you.
You’re never required to respond to a mention, and you’re always free to step back from a discussion.
If someone repeatedly mentions you in ways that feel uncomfortable, you can report the post so moderators can review it.
If being mentioned feels overwhelming or distressing, you’re welcome to contact the moderation team for support.
What if @mentions are being used inappropriately?
If someone repeatedly mentions you or uses @mentions in a way that feels pressuring or upsetting, you can:
- report the post using the Report Post button, or
- contact the moderation team for support
Misuse of @mentions may result in moderation action, including restriction of access to the feature.
