I got to admit,I love reading at the best of times. Those of us who love to read tend to get the most out of books.I'm a big fan of books that I can learn from.Self help books, relationship books, etc. There's something worth learning.I even read up on dating books just to relearn some skills. As a guy I also love the guy stuff, cars, hobbies, interests, man cave, etc.

What book are you reading? What books are you reading? What helps you?

Thanks.

Fabulous - just like his genius writing and superb one-liners. Its called Neil Simon Rewrites... My favourite playwright...had a very interesting youth on the poor side of New York...quite a few of his plays/movies were taken from his real life experiences, based on family members, ex-wives etc.......

it sounds iconic and amazing

do u like any other playwrights?

Are u a fan of plays as a genre? i'm getting into reading them atm, and have had the privelege to see a few classic plays performed

Hi all,

There is a book currently out called "All Our Shimmering Skies" by Trent Dalton
I see it everywhere - people carrying it, or advertisements for it, or interviews with the author on ABC.
Anyone read this one? 🙂

I'm guessing the hype is based on the success of his previous book. I've read neither of them. The last time I went with popular consensus, I bought 50 Shades of Grey, and that was a hugely regrettable decision lol

To answer your earlier question, I do like to draw. My old self (before poor MH) was very creative. I've started doing things again lately, and sometimes I wonder if I'm finding my way back to myself. Wouldn't that be something!

Hi Katy

i'm such a skeptic - i also avoid popular books. I didn't know he had a previous hit but that definitely explains it! It also has a pretty cover lol.
I know exactly what u mean re pre mental health - I had a hugely creative life too ...

i'm sorry you feel it has been impacted but how exciting to feel it's returning... drawing is a huge part of recovery and sometimes helps me more than therapy!

Hyped up books I've got into were

The Magic Art of Tidying by Marie Kondo
and I also bought Embrace by Tarryn Brumford (?)

two self-help books I absolutely should not have bought lol.

Bought two new books as a treat today:

A collection of poems by the author of On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous - Ocean Vuong.
The writing is amazing.

Also a memoir on MH by Rosie Waterland - Every Lie I've Ever Told

I'm nervous this may be triggering due to suicide themes but I also know that she works hard on her MH and hopefully will be more inspiring than depressing.

oooh good on you for treating yourself! Let us know how they go!

I've gobbled my way through Slaughterhouse Five and am already thinking I'll need to line more books up, even though I have a few waiting lol

Hello Sleepy21.....For the pleasure of "just reading" I prefer non-fiction books (like autobiographies ....life is usually more strange than fiction) therefore I don't actually "read" plays unless its for a specific purpose...some of my favourite playwrights besides Neil Simon are Alan Ayckbourne, Oscar Wilde, Harold Pinter, Noel Coward, Shakespeare (sometimes) and can't think of any more right now. But for "one-liners" no one surpasses Neil...that man was a genius!!!

Like you I've also seen many onstage (I think you have to see it performed to really appreciate the writing) and I've also acted onstage in many.

Other favourite authors of mine are Cheryl Strayed and J D Salinger. "Tiny Beautiful Things" by Cheryl is an absolute gem...priceless, can't speak highly enough of it.

moon i I have read Wild by Cheryl Strayed but not the book you mentioned. I will look for it. Thanks for the tip.

Some years ago when I was in NY I stayed at the motel opposite the Neil Simon theatre , when i told people under 30 about Neil Simon they would asked is he related to Paul Simon.

To your list of playwrights I would add Chekov, and Ibsen.
