MBTI personality types

I have had an ongoing fascination with analysing personality, and what makes myself and others tick, and have found the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to be a surprisingly accurate measure of such things. I have catalogued the types of many of the people in my life, and probably driven them nuts with my project. It's an interesting study, though, observing consistent traits among the types, how they relate to life skills, coping strategies, how they function in different settings and why.

If you know your type, feel free to share, and things you may have discovered about yourself or that have helped you relate to others using resources about it. If you don't know your type, and want to, I found the site 16 Personalities pretty good for testing and dissecting the types.

If it's of any interest, I am an INTP, and the information about my type on that site is pretty spot-on. I've only used that as a starting point for my research. There is so much information out there on the types, and the differences between them that actually goes a long way to breaking down the core of otherwise confusing conflicts, or getting the most out of a person at work or in a friendship, etc.

Anyway, it's a bit of a project of mine, and I wanted to open it up to anyone who wants to contribute.

I want to work for you Rob. Shame you're not in Canberra.

Loved your post Joelle - I'm a chronic INTJ too. And it's been another day ... won't trouble you with the details. I've got a minimum of five years till retirement ... that's a lot of days.

Shame, because you would be brilliant. We have representatives of all personality types and our theory is that knowing our own helps us identify strengths and plan with those in mind. I am a little obsessed at the moment with how the left and the right sides of the brain tackle a problem and come up with a solution- we all have a preference, and it is interesting when we think visually when normally logic driven or the other way round.

Thanks Shelley and Blue 🙂 Was a bit concerned.

That ability of mine is literally the only thing I am proud of, even that can waiver at times (the pride not the ability).

Box fort sounds great.

Thanks Kaz. Hmmm...5 years. That sounds like both a long and short time to me. Where will we be in 5 years?

Anyway, it seems I'm missing the descriptors of my character type, though I'm sure it's been posted if there are more like me out there. I saw something like Defender earlier for another personality type. What classification have I? I'll check it out.

Hiya Joelle. My dream is that in five years time (more like seven if I'm being realistic) I will be dividing my time between here (Canberra) and the coast. Enjoying long lazy days with my gorgeous Pom, lovingly tending a beautiful garden, singing to my roses and playing with my doggies (and, who knows, maybe a grandchild? If I don't have one by then I'll find one to 'adopt'). Maybe working part-time as a volunteer helping people with mental illness or homelessness, maybe cooking in a soup kitchen or such (provided there's no committees). Small ambitions really after a lifetime of 'career', and my idea of heaven.

How about you hun, where do you want to be in five years?

xx

Joelle, on that site at least, you are "The Architect" (something I've also seen applied to INTPs elsewere, though on 16 Personalities, I am quite appropriately labelled "The Logician"). I've also seen the INTJ type labelled "The Strategist", which makes sense to me. INTJs tend to think ahead about the effectiveness of their actions and interactions and pull strings a bit to make things go the way they want them to. It can work well, except when trying to factor in the emotions of others or things like groupthink, which can be a bit unpredictable. They don't make sense. There's a theme, here...

Kaz, I hope that's exactly where you wind up in five years. Sounds potentially achievable, at least, which is good. Had to laugh at your aside re committees. Rotten things.

Hey Blues, what a great thread

Like Mary I am a ENFJ...and i will have to go back to my notes on my personality or lack thereof 🙂

Every time I read your thread I 'get it' but lose track of the different types of persona.....I have had an audiogram recently...no problem there, memory retrieval is another matter altogether!.....Can you post a quick reminder somehow what the different 'tags' mean? just so we can (or I can ) follow the jargon as I have no immediate reference or recall of what personality types that are mentioned...unless I use the 'google machine' 🙂

I used to be confused but now I am not quite so sure......doh! Paulo x

Paul, I'll quickly run through what all the letters mean, assuming that's what you're asking for.

I or E mean Introversion or Extraversion

N or S mean iNtuitive (presumably so I isn't used twice) or Sensing

T or F mean Thinking or Feeling

P or J mean Perceiving/Prospecting or Judging

The types are all combinations of the above. It's a bit to remember, I know. I've studied it a while and am a bit of a human catalogue when I get caught up in a project, so I don't really expect anyone to remember the details the way I do.

Each of the letters is a guide to individual traits, and can combine in very different ways for a surprising variation in characteristics, which is one of the reasons I find it all so fascinating. I've examined my own personality extensively and that of those close to me, drawing correlations and making sense of differences. The MBTI has been a useful tool. As has the "Google machine"... You remind me of an amusing moment at work. Our butcher, and older gent, came in one day and saw me goofing around with my phone and asked "Is that one of them Googly phones you can look things up on?" It has henceforth been known as my Googly phone. 🙂

muchas muchas gracias muchacha agradable

That sounds like a pleasant end game, and a fulfilling one. Stress free if no committees are involved.

5 years...I want to have completed my Master's by then, on a project I chose and liked, and did it well. I want to approach the lab I used to work for, and work on heart regeneration, or something orthopedic as a back up (We don't have to be very realistic in this 5 years thing right?). And more importantly, I want to have done the Everest Base Camp trek, and around that area. Maybe consider doing a trip with some sort of community rebuilding tied to it. We'll see where we get to ey? 5 years from now.

I asked three "why" questions today, to be told I don't need to know...it's just lunch time...
