Thanks for the replies. Yes I have no problem in offering him a modest amount out of goodwill to keep the machine just to save both of us all the hassle ....I've asked the Tech who has supplied all the office equipment over the years what amount would be fair...he's the most recognised dealer/tech business for this brand in the area...the computer is so old, it is regarded as "obsolete" .

Wasn't purchased new, but an overhaul of a second hand one - certain programs and facilities can't be updated or installed because of its age, parts no longer available when it breaks down and in his words is worth "Nothing!". It's worth a lot to me though, as its my connection to the outside world as well as having so many years of my history on it.

if I can keep it - when it breaks down, it breaks down...and I will get a new machine then. this is the scenario I am hoping for anyway........thanks again.

Keeping it - provided you do not pay too much is a good option, there is one thing though: as an older computer it may not last for ever, and if you have not taken steps in the meantime to make copies of your stuff elsewhere you will lose all your personal material at that stage.

Let's hope he is generous and just gives it to you, it can't be worth that much to the business now. If he needs business documents off it you could get a tech to put them on a USB stick or drive for him.

Are you comfortable with cutting your files from the My Documents folder and pasting them onto a USB stick?

What's your email service as it's possible no mail data is stored on the computer.

I'd say a computer shop will quote 2 hours work on this and they charge about $130 per hour.

Hey Moonstruck,

Could you maybe outline what you’d really like to do? Personally, I feel it’s a waste of money to be throwing $$ at old technology.. The only justification would be if you had what’s called legacy software that absolutely cannot be run on newer hardware/OS or replaced with a newer version or different software. If you could mention what this software is, then myself or others might be able to offer better solutions as to what to do, cheers M 🙂

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Sorry I haven't got back to you. I really need some advice here, and if anyone replies, please use really simple layman's terms.. I have been allowed to keep on with this present computer, which is a huge relief...it only means I will be changing providers. My current provider runs out just after Christmas. I have investigated others and found one with an affordable home phone/home internet bundle. I just have to sign up.

I don't know when to sign up. Do I sign up after this current provider is disconnected, or before? My email address will be changed and letting friends/family know is no problem...but the organisations who have my email....e.g. this forum, PayPal, other various ones that I can log into with my email address and password, when do I let them know? Before or after my current email is disconnected?

How can I log in, if the email address they have me registered to, is null and void?

My anxiety is going through the roof about this. I am told once I sign up I will have to wait a few days for a modem to be delivered to me. Will it be easy to connect? Will everything on the computer look the same?

Can someone please help me.....with simple language please? it is all getting on top of me and I cant cope with it, nor have anyone to come here and help me......thanks....Moon S....

Dear Moon~

I'm glad you are able to keep your old computer, that is one hassle less.

Connecting to another provider is beyond my ability to describe there, just be aware that you need a mobile to ask for help if your landline is being disconnected if it is on the same plan. Normally it is pretty easy, plug in, log on (and connect to a new wifi if you use it) then go.

When to sign up depends. Given the inevitable delays over the holiday season if it was me I'd make sure the new company could in fact supply a connection prior to the old connection running out. Otherwise you might have to extend you old one for a while.

As for changing email addresses, with companies like PayPal you can have more than one email address. In all cases register the new one before your old address is disconnected. A good work-around many people use is to have an email address that is not linked to any particular ISP. Although not the only one gmail is a popular choice. With that you can change to using it anytime. Ensure your bank knows of the change as they might query a login form a strange Provider.

Once connected most things will look the same.

I replid on your thread but thought I would do so here also.

There is no harm signing up now with your new provider. I assume your boss pays the current one? They Will simply switch you over when you modem arrives. if i remember correctly you won't be without internet if it is done before it runs out. When you get the modem plug it in and then ring them to help you set it up. It is usually just putting in a password which they will help you with.

Croix has covered the rest. Keep asking Moon if you get stuck. Between all of us we will get you through it.

thank you so much my friends. I know it sounds like I am making a mountain out of the proverbial molehill, but you may know this year is always a bad time for me...Xmas means triggers for me.

Croix covered the basics. Last year I did the same thing when I moved house. I ended up doing some research in order to purchase an email address that is independent of my internet provider. Seriously, changing ISPs is worse than shifting you bank accounts!

In preparation,

1. I suggest that you start a pen and paper list of everything that needs your email address, so you can change it, and tick them off.
2. Aus Post has a digital mailbox - you might want to investigate this, because you can use that to have your bills sent to - doesn’t matter what your email address is, you can always access it via a web browser.

I’m 15 months moved, and I still find things I need to change my email addy on.

Also, I found PayPal to be really annoying about making my new address, the primary address - just a heads up.

Basically, it’s about attention to detail, unfortunately for you, it’s precisely the wrong time of year, what with Xmas and end of school etc - you have my sympathy 😞

As others have said, keep asking if you need a pointer in the right direction, I’ll make sure I keep an eye on this thread. Bestest, cheers M 🙂

Once you are registered with an organisation, logging on just compares the email address you type in, with what they have on record. They don't try to validate that it's active as part of the logon, so you should be able logon as you do currently, *then* update your details.

Someone else has suggested a gmail account, and I second this, as you can change internet providers (or travel the world), and still use the same email without needing to change anything.
