Hi guys,
I was inspired by Neil's thread about favourite movies. I want to know - what are some of your favourite bands/musicians?
Do you have an album that you listen to over and over? Is there a songwriter who you connect with, that seem like they draw their lyrics directly from your soul? What is your favourite style of music? Who did you grow up listening to?
Are you a musician yourself?
And importantly, I'm always looking to discover another band or genre so if you have any suggestions of a great song let me know so that I can look it up 🙂
As for me, I don't really like most of the stuff that gets played on the radio. The lyrics seem meaningless to me, and the songs are mostly produced just to make money - not to connect with an audience or tell a story. I prefer songs and artists that are sincere and genuine, that confront important and real life topics or are emotionally touching. that doesn't mean I live for slow ballads... no, I listen to all kinds of music, fast paced - slow and rhythmic, rap, hip hop, jazz, folk, rock, alternative, metal.... I love it so long as it has some depth.
I'm currently hooked on a band called Twenty One Pilots. I love em! Also, I recently discovered a genre called Nerdcore which is rapping about nerdy stuff like computer games and everyday events etc... I love rap but I don't love a lot of the language or topics that are usually rapped about, so chilling out to some lighthearted Nerdcore works for me 🙂

my favourite musicians, bands/singers/artists are listed below >=:)
MetallicA \m/^_^\m/ been a fan since '96 and in the Metclub since '98, they are in their early 50's but are still kicking ass! Joe Satriani, he's my fav. guitarist. David Bowie, just too much talent in one body. U2, they haven't really done an album that's moved me since *POP* but the last album was good. ELVIS, his live albums are amazing! I have 4 of them and I love his gospel recordings. The Beatles, I love all their albums but the late 60's stuff is my favourite stuff. Pink Floyd, The Wall is in my top 10 albums of all time. Michael Jackson, if you want to dance just listen to 'Off The Wall' >=:)
wait this list is going to go on forever, Dream Theater, Baroness, Mastodon. i'll finish it there but please indulge me in listing my top 10 fav. guitarists >=:) Joe Satriani (Satch), Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, James Hetfield, The Edge, David Gilmour, Jimi Hendrix, John Petrucci, Kirk Hammett, John Dyer Baizley.

I go through phases of genres/bands, and I get to a point where I haven't listened to a band in so long that I'm not sure if I "feel like I like them but I just don't feel like listening to them", or have permanently outgrown them. I only occasionally step backwards for nostalgia or because my mood's reminded me of a song lyric (I'm not sure what that says about my emotional maturity - that it sometimes hearkens back to resonances from high school or primary school). I've *attempted* to list bands that I still feel like I like.. :S
Guns N' Roses, Led Zep, Queen, Rage Against The Machine, Linkin Park, Eminem, Silverchair, early Marilyn Manson, Beatles, Lennon, Bowie, Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, Electric Wizard, Sabbath, maudlin of the Well, Kayo Dot, The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Blonde Redhead, Portishead, Battle of Mice, Neurosis, Stolen Babies, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Rachmaninov, Beethoven, Chopin, Sleep, Ramesses, Acrimony, Pond, Boris.
Nowadays I mostly listen to random classical stuff decided by a website's magical algorithm; whatever's on RTR, Triple J, or the ABC classical station; and local bands.
I play bass in a post-punky band at the moment. Kinda Cure-y, Doors-ey, Nirvana-ey.

I must say, I'm with you on this one. I don't generally listen to mainstream music. I'm a huge metal fan, I find if I'm having a bad day it actually calms me. The louder the better. Who would think metal could do that?! My all time favourite is Disturbed, other favourites are Avenged Sevenfold, Five Finger Death Punch, Korn, Black Veil Brides, Bullet For My Valentine, Linkin Park, Pop Evil, just to name a few! 🙂

I'm 52 so I have had a lot of favourites over the years.
When I was 17 to 20
I listened mostly to Wreckless Eric (anyone else remember?), passed through The Members, The Clash, Neil Young (my favourite for a very long time) and am now back to the beginning of the circle listening to Wreckless Eric again. Still the same one album. Don't know or care if he ever did anything else but "The Wonderful World Of Wreckless Eric" is my alltime favourite that I can STILL listen to all day everyday after nearly 40 years.

Hi Neil,
so your post is a bit older and you may have lost interest in following this one but I'm going to reply anyway.
Music is a very mood driven thing for me. I wish I could write, but everything I pen is really just a bit ordinary.
I play guitar too but not often enough which means I'm a bit ordinary at that too.
as for listening pleasure, it depends on the day.
Up loud when I want to be consumed by the sounds, I love Calexico, the black light is my favourite album.
I also love live music and get out (when I can to see local bands).
Some of my favourites range from bands like Detroit Cobras, The Grates, Yeah yeah yeahs, Adalita, Batmobile, the Living End, Ella Fitzgerald, Artic Monkeys, the creepshow, calling all cars....
Some of the music I don't listen to so much these days but love pulling it out at times are BabyAnimals, git, cat power, Portishead....
hope you find some new listening pleasure in some of these. 🙂
