Hi all

Believe it or not I find crime fiction my form of relaxation! It helps occupy my mind & I enjoy the thrill of the journey.

ive read most of the mainstream writers like Patricia Cornwall, Val McDermid, Ian rankin, Stuart McBride as well as popular scandivain authors. I have a bit of love for British crime fiction, police procedurals, edge of seat thrillers etc. I was a great fan of the Tv series The Wire & read the book as well. Any Tv series or movie suggestions also welcome. I was a big Sopranos fan. I'm hoping for some new suggestions in crime genre.

All responses very appreciated.

Yes surprise surprise I am a mystery/crime fan. I would add Lynda LaPlante and Mark Billingham to the list of British crime fiction and Linwood Barclay to the Americans. For crime TV series The Fall, Broadchurch and Happy Valley (all british) are wonderful.

Hello Mares and Jess

Great to hear from both of you. You both missed out Agatha Christie, the queen.

TV series - Father Brown Stories. The books are better. From memory they were set in Spain but the TV series is set in England. I love Lewis but was never a fan of Inspector Morse. In Oz there is the Miss Fisher Mysteries. I think I enjoy that most because of the heroine. There was a NZ series, complete with accents, called The Brokenwood Mysteries. A new player on the scene.

New series called Grantchester with Robson Green, an all-time favourite of mine. Did either of you watch Wire in the Blood? I'm not sure if pure aficionados would ban me from the circle, but I do enjoy Bones. Mostly I suspect because it really is science fiction.

How could I forget Lynda la Plante & Mark Billingham Jess!

And White Rose I LOVED that series Wire in the blood. There were some great BBC crime shows appearing for a while there but sadly it's rare to find a good BBC Series.

Any other suggestions?

As I said, Grantchester is a BBC production. Did you know Robson Green came from the midlands in the UK? Actually just up the road from me, so to speak.

So many re-runs these days, I get quite bored. I used to be a Sci-Fi addict but lately I have gone off this genre. Even Dr Who fails to stir me.

I enjoyed Poirot. The actor who portrayed Poirot was great and I am ashamed I cannot remember his name.

Hi, I used to read Agatha Christie, I tried watching the series, but found the books gave greater insight. I also love the Tara Moss series. Murder She Wrote starring our own Jess F was another good one. Poirot was played by David Suchet. I actually preferred Jane Marple and Tommy and Tuppence. I grew up with Enid Blyton's Famous Five and Secret Seven. On t.v I love Criminal Minds, Major Crimes, both American but I love them both. Heartbeat of course, mustn't forget Nick Berry/Rowan. I wish Australia would put out more of those type of shows. Water Rats was great, Blue Heelers, although that became boring. Sea Patrol with Lisa Mccune.

Lynda.

Hi Mares73!

I am a HUUUUUGE crime fiction fan! I too love Patricia Cornwall and Ian Rankin, I can credit my dad for getting me into them! I would strongly recommend checking out Harlen Coben, Matthew Connely and ESPECIALLY Karin Slaughter, she is by far my favourite crime thriller author! I'd love to hear your feedback if you ever read one of her books!

I read just about anything, but crime-wise I wanted to recommend Leah Giarratano's books (Black Ice, Voodoo Doll, ... two others I can't think of right now). She's written four but there are whispers of potentially more crime novels in the future. Leah is a psychologist with experience in working with both trauma victims and forensic clients, and her books are really, really well done. If you are looking for something different by an Australian author, I personally think you can't go past them. Has anyone read any of hers?

Happy Reading!

Dear Mares73,

I too am a fan, collecting TV series (probably a little to far in the past for many to be interested), however I'll mention three Police procedurals that have stood the test of time:

"Naked City", 1948 film and the TV series (1959-1963) set in New York and emphasizing human situations and frailties with some sympathy rather than shoot 'em ups.

"Adam-12", TV series 1968-1975. Set in LA and deals with 2 uniform officers responding to a very mixed bag of incidents. Approved of by many serving officers at the time as being authentic - if a bit squeaky clean.

"Law and Order" 1978 BBC (NOT the US TV series) set of 4 shows covering Detective, Villain, Brief & Prisoner in London. Very very realistic, not nice. Written by G F Newman whose books you may enjoy.

I am a huge crime book/TV show fan!

Everyone has pretty much said everything I would have, but I thought I would just say hello anyway!

I certainly will be getting some new books in the coming week now!

Have a great day.
