Treatment of OCD?

Hi 🙂

I have been struggling with OCD for a few months now but I'm unsure about getting help.

If you have OCD, what route have you taken to receive treatment?

What has helped you, what hasn't?

Hi sarahlouise 🙂

I saw a psychologist for years for anxiety and OCD and while it helped, the breakthrough for me was when my psychologist had me see a psychiatrist to prescribe me medication. It has allowed me to take more control and feel less like my life is being ruled by OCD.

If you're not keen on medication it's possible to treat without it, replacing it with therapy, so you could start with psychology sessions and see how you go, however it is pretty common to go on medication and combine this with therapy, which has been most effective for me.

I'm sure someone will come along with more specific advice on organising to see your GP or a psychologist...

Meanwhile I hope this helps,

Hi sarahlouisexo. I think jellicogirl had really good advice about seeing your GP and getting a referral to a psychologist. They use a variety of treatment therapies on of the main ones being CBT and other talking therapy. I myself have GAD and I am not too sure what therapies my psychologist uses on me, but I know it works. I found opening up to someone who won't judge you and who is professional is really beneficial. I suggest booking a long consult to discuss your concerns to your GP

One think I do to help reduce my anxiety is to meditate. I use the app calm but I know others use different apps like headspace and smiling minds. I find it helps stop my racing thoughts. It also helps me stay in the moment. I use the techniques from meditation for when I am really stressed.

Hope this helps.
