Taiwan

While I have managed to reduce my anxiety concerning the whole Ukraine conflict, there is another brewing conflict which is starting to worry me even more: the China-Taiwan situation. A lot of analysts seem to think that China is going to try and invade Taiwan at some point, and while that in itself would be a terrible tragedy there are three main reasons which are particularly fuelling my anxiety: the prospect of Australia being attacked or invaded, the consequences of American intervention on America, and the possibility of a nuclear crisis.

The current Australian government has been very tough, at least in words, when it comes to China, sometimes very legitimately and sometimes very recklessly. I'm terrified that if Australia directly intervened we'd get hit with air raids, ballistic missiles or even invaded.

As for American intervention, it looks increasingly likely to me, and I'm really worried (since I have a lot of online friends over there) that if it resulted in American territory getting directly attacked or an economic collapse it would result in a civil war and/or some sort of military or Neo-Nazi dictatorship.

My third great fear is that if America intervened it could trigger a nuclear exchange, since both countries have them. I really hope the people who matter are sensible enough not to let it happen, but the possibility is enough to terrify me.

These fears have been plaguing my mind, on and of, for half a year and when they come to the surface they really sap my enjoyment and optimism for the future.

Think you're probably going too far down that rabbit hole bud.

Australia will never be invaded in the future, it is too remote, has too many allies and China is too reliant on our resources.

The world has moved past full scale conflicts such as ww2.

As horrifying as it may seem with the russian/Ukraine war....it is a complete different situation.

Russia could have flattened Ukraine and still could in a matter of days, that is no putins goal hence this slow operation to pressure Ukraine to annex certain areas to Russia.

Media is good at reporting these things in a way that is all doom and gloom.

Thank you very much for your very kind reply.

Yeah, I know deep down I'm not being very rational, here. The problem is that there are a lot of scare-mongers around in certain circles and people making hot takes, and also since studying stuff to do with WWII at uni recently my brain keeps applying it to everything, gah! I have to keep in mind that it was nearly 100 years ago, a very different era.

Thanks 🙂

Hello Doberman, and thanks Guest_7403, what we hear is from the media, they have to sell papers, news bulletins on TV etc, and although Putin has decimated Ukraine for some unbenign reason (or not benign) but they are doing what this person never expected, and it will take humpteen years to rebuilt this country and to us we ask the question 'what for'.

'Australia has too many allies and China is too reliant on our resources', as we are for them, and all the big countries in Nato will be keeping a close eye on what's going on and will pounce whenever needed.

This has been going on for years and although you could be frightened, there isn't anything you or I can do, governments make decisions whether we like them or not.

Take care.

Geoff.

Thanks very much, Geoff.

You're right, it's hardly new. Looking back to all the Cold War references in old shows, like Monty Python, put things in more perspective for me.

It's terrible these things happen, but we just have to make do I guess.
