Hi Jackson. I can say I have been in the exact same shoes as you. I think it is normal to be nervous going to your first psych appointment. They are professionals and they know most people are nervous their first time seeing someone. They will help make it easier. Please make sure you go. I was so nervous and scared that I would cancel I actually told a friend at my uni I had booked an appointment because I was struggling and I asked her to make sure I went to the appointment. This helped me because I knew I couldn't back out.
The headspace staff are lovely. I have been to three centres as a client because I moved states (and one of them only had the psychiatrist at a headspace further away but I didn't wanna travel that far to see my psychologist as I saw here once a fortnight). All of the centres were amazing. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. It is a judge free environment. It took me a few sessions to open up to them and really go into my issues, fears and concerns, but this is normal. Now don't be discouraged if after the first appointment you don't know what to think, rappor does take time and you usually just chat for the first session so they can get to know you and what you want out of seeing them. Overall headspace psychs (and all psychs in general) are really good.
Please let me know how you go 🙂 I would say good luck but I know you don't need it

Hi Jackson1994,
The first appointments are always the scariest and nerve wrecking. The idea here is to go in with the mindset that they are there to purely help you. They won't be pushing you to speak about things, just gently asking questions to see how and why you feel the way you feel. This is such a positive step that you are seeing someone and getting the help you require. You will look back on it and see how good and positive it was for you. When someone down the track has these feelings you will be able to tell them it will be ok, cause it will be ok.
Please, let us know how it goes.
My best for you,
Jay

I personally haven't used the psychology and counselling services at headspace, but I have/am seeing a psychologist at the moment. I totally feel you about having the first appointment and feeling scared. I say go in afraid - and make sure you tell them you're nervous about it, and they will help you around it. It makes it easier for them to help
Good luck and keep us updated,
Suzi

Hey Jackson!
Have you thought about taking someone with you? A parent or family member, hell even a close friend?
I'm around your age and I still take my mother with me. I know if It weren't for her I wouldn't make it through the front door.
