Hello,
I work at a casual hospitality job and I get so nervous. The thought of working consumes my life. When I’m there I get so nervous I have bad panic attack’s and am scared I’m going to vomit. I’m scared about how long I work too. Do you have any ideas what to do going further?

Hi, welcome
Many of us have suffered anxiety with our employment or past employment. So here are some tips-
- Aim for a goal working with no people involved or limited people
- Consider 2 part time jobs rather than 1 full time job. Then you have less time to tolerate those in each job
- Introduce humour into your work, short, funny remarks to other employees makes fun at work more pleasurable
- Breathing exercises while working, slow deep breaths.
- Control your life eg no overtime.
- Think about 1,2,5,10 year plans for employment/career
- Aim for self employment down the track. A hobby for example. I was unemployed for 2.5 years in the early 1990's, during that time I made one cubby house with attic windows etc like a big dolls house. I had 14 orders that xmas. But be realistic because the next year I went 11 months without one order till that xmas then only had 5 orders. Some ideas are seasonal.
A second part time job also gives you security. I used to always worry that if I lost my job I'd lose my house.

Hello and thank you so much for reaching out to our forums. We know how much courage it takes to share your story, so you should be really proud of yourself for taking this step towards getting more support.
We totally hear you on the hospitality front - working in customer service can be really, really daunting! Many of us over at Beyond Blue have had similar experiences at your age, so please know you aren't alone in this at all!
It sounds like you might be needing a little extra support to get more comfortable with the role, and that is okay. It's normal for things to be scary at first, especially if they are new. Over time, with repeated exposure and practice, it really does get easier. Have you ever found something hard or nerve-wracking in the past, but it has become less stressful over time? Well, this will probably be the same with your job too!
We would recommend identifying what it is about the job that makes you feel most scared and why. Then we would suggest taking it to your manager or even a school counsellor to discuss some small steps you can take towards making the tasks more approachable. It seems like this feels really big for you, so breaking things down will help.
For example, is it remembering the job requirements, talking to customers, or following instructions that makes you feel the most nervous? When you know what it is, try to consider: 'what is one thing that would make this feel even 1% easier?'
We know it feels like a lot right now, but you're doing an amazing job just by showing up. Our first jobs take a huge amount of bravery - so make sure you're giving yourself lots of compassion whilst you're still learning.
Good luck and let us know how you go!
Warm regards,
Sophie M.
