Anxiety and work

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting. I am 25 and withun the last 8 months I have been suffering from bad anxiety and depression.

I work in the financial planning industry and have now discovered that it is a big reason for my anxiety and depression. In the last year I have worked at 3 offices and experienced severe bullying, being treated like I'm nothing because I'm female and having expectations that can't be fulfilled.

I had a breakdown last year with multiple panic attacks daily, bad depression and anxiety and have been struggling to find myself again since.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated as I know I need to get a new job in a different industry but jobs are very hard to get at the moment and I don't know how much longer I can stay in this job anymore.

thank you

Hello Bella

welcome and thank you for sharing how you’re feeling. The forums & the Beyond Blue community are welcoming, kind& non judgemental.

I too am in this industry & have been in situations where this feeling of anxiety is uncontrollable. I then moved into a different office & it has been the best thing for me - personally & professionally.

if you can I would encourage you to visit your GP & maybe chat to them how you’re feeling and if it’s necessary look to complete a mental health plan. Talking to a professional can help & May allow you to build the confidence to step outside the industry and use your skills in another.

i am thinking of you & thank you for reaching out. Happy to chat anytime. Take care

Hi Bella I have written about this previously as I left my job in finance and took 15 months off. I completely destressed during that period it was the best thing I did.

I am back in finance and again not enjoying it however I am double your age and loathe to leave as it is harder to find another job at my age.

You are young so can move into a new career with many years ahead of you. Maybe see if you can do some sort of volunteer work in your free time to get your mind away from your current job.

Hang in there things will change.

I know it's been a while but thank you for your replies. A bit of an update.. I'm now on new medication and found that is working quite well, I'm only at the 3 week mark though. A week ago I was made redundant from my job and while a small part of me is relieved, my anxiety is now back as I am stressing about money and trying to figure out what I want to do job wise now.

Every one says I should feel relieved to be out of the bad environment I was in and I do feel relieved but this has triggered anxiety again anyway. My confidence has taken a big hit as a "friend" of mine got me the job and then threw me under the bus for the last 5 months and we no longer speak. I feel like I'm not smart enough for any job and that's not usually the person I am.

Hang in there Bella. I know how you feel. I got all these qualifications in hospitality without the experience and then recently I realised that hospitality was too stressful for me with my bipolar. So I had to find other jobs I could do. Then I started working with my partner setting up for functions and I found that was a better more relaxed person doing that job. I think having time to de stress when your not working would help you a lot. I recommend meditation and it can help you get more perspective and it’s very relaxing.
