Please help, im a 22 year old male and have suffered from anxiety/depression for a while now. I have been on antidepressants for roughly 1 year now and it has made a verry possitive improvement to my life but all of a sudden my anxiety/depression has returned causing everything to go downhill again. Is it possible my medication has stopped working . I also suffer from epilepsy and take medication daily to control it, is there maybe a chance my medications are clashing ? I see my doctor Monday but thought maybe someone had experienced this before ?

Hi Merc, welcome

Some don't realise that there are usually still ups and down on the right medication in my experience but less so. And other factors come into play like diet, fitness, worries etc. So it doesn't mean they have stopped working.

I had a similar thought last year when I thought my mood stabilisers weren't working anymore. So got approval to up them a little. Then a couple of weeks later the side effects of that extra amount became apparent. So we lowered them back to the original dosage and all was good. Now I accept that the ups and downs isn't worth the trauma of changing the dose. But it really is a needed discussion with your GP.

Also a regular review is good because things change.

Hi Merc,

I can relate to this, I've had medications make a huge difference then all of a sudden I've fallen back down the hill again.

There are many factors that can induce this. Either something big has happened recently that is effecting you, or yes, the medication has just run its course.

Now there is two things you can do here, go to the GP and seek a new one that is not too different, or, talk to your GP about coming off them.

'Coming off them???' Yeah I know its a scary thought, but if they are not working so well, why keep taking them? Now for my reasoning behind this one, as its my favourite and very few people consider this thought... Maybe it hasn't stopped working? How do you tell after so long? You come off, get clean, and find out who you truly are again, find out exactly how the medication DID effect you and if that's what you still want, or if you have become stronger and wiser and, not needing medication, is it actually holding you back now...

Tony has some great points there but here is another one people miss... Have you been sick at all lately? Being sick usually makes us feel weak and venerable right? So its not that hard to see that being quite sick can also feel like a relapse, which in turn makes you feel down or bad, which in turn can cause an ACTUAL relapse...

Everybody builds up an immunity to, I'm going to say 'substances' cause that's what they are, at different rates as well, so maybe its no good for you anymore, maybe its BEGINNING to clash with your other meds, maybe you need to increase dose, or maybe you need to come off and re learn who you are without any alterations, OR, maybe its just a temporary phase...

Either way going back to your GP quite regularly is always advised, but do not allow yourself to be pushed into something if your uncomfortable with it as this can cause an unexpected stress...

Also I must say, don't let the fact that your struggling stress or upset you, it IS normal, and letting something out of your control get to you can bring you down quite quickly as nothing you think or do effects it as much as you try and that can make you feel hopeless...

Best of luck mate hope some of my ideas help you or at least make you think.

But stay strong, talk to people, there's always a shoulder for everybody to lean on somewhere.
