Hi Dorey and welcome,
Your post hit home. I do ok for a few months on meds (not feeling suicidal is a huge change after all). But after a while on meds I hit a slump and feel flat and low. The temptation is to ask about medications. But the reality is the meds are doing what they need to do.
Apart from your medication what else have you put into place to manage your depression and anxiety?
You don't have to answer that. Just think on it if you feel able. My psychiatrist tells me often medication is not enough on it's own. I've been really down lately and asked about a medication review and he asked me...
Are you at risk of hurting yourself? Can you function most of the time better than before the medication?
In his mind that is the medication doing "enough". Keeping me reasonably stable and safe. Everything else is on me. To find things that help me manage my own feelings. To supplement the medications.
How? Therapy for one. Talking through the root causes. Learning skills such as mindfulness and recognising unhelpful thinking styles, exercise, distance from toxic situations... The list goes on.
What do you think of his view?
To me I felt empowered if a bit disappointed. Although I feel crap it is on me to help myself. He is confident I have the ability to do so. Nothing about managing a MI is easy. But you are up to it. There are lots of threads here about self help techniques if you are interested.
Of course this is just my view and it would be best to go have a chat to your medical professional about your expectations of the meds and what they feel would be best. Would love to hear more from you if you feel able.
Nat
